CANADA - Long-distance Transport: One Cruel Ride

Bill C-468 was introduced on Wednesday, October 28, 2009. It would decrease maximum transport times for farm animals to be in line with those of other industrialized nations. Currently, Canada's legislation allows animals such as pigs, chickens and horses to be transported for up to 36 hours with no food, water or rest break. Animals like cattle, sheep and goats may be transported up to 52 hours without food, water or a break and may be left for a staggering 81 hours without food.

A dozen aged 17 Torreorgaz killed a donkey punching, kicking and inserting a stick into the rectum until it burst inside. It happened at dawn yesterday, following a night out.

The animal owner, Gonzalo Gomez Luengo, received a call from a neighbor at seven o'clock alerting him that his donkey was tied to a rope at the bus station in the town, located just inside the municipality. He was still alive, but showed signs of being in critical condition. So much so that half an hour later the donkey died and had to be moved by the municipal services to a warehouse donated by the city council, where it is stored waiting to be removed today by the Department of Nature Protection of the Guardia Civil ( Seprona).

"Tonight - on the night of Thursday to Friday - have left 12 boys, but they have gotten out of hand because they have killed an animal, which in addition the fact that he is protected," she says. The nature protection organizations consider the Spanish donkey because a protected animal is in danger of extinction.

REPORT OF VETERINARIAN An inspection conducted by the vet removed the donkey, who was 20, "was busted inside." Soledad Gomez told this newspaper that showed symptoms of having been beaten with fists and kicks. "Even I have got sticks up their butts," he said. The effects of this action are visible to the naked eye, but the animal's rectum exploded. Then the fifth tied by the neck with a rope to the bus stop, where she was found by a neighbor who called the owner.

By tradition, the fifth of the people out all Thursday evenings from October until the bridge of the Constitution, on December 6. They cut and burn oak on Christmas Eve. It is also tradition that during these nights of partying steal chickens in the farms of the people, then they hide and at Christmas the cook to eat for dinner, which means the end of the activity for these fifths. The next year the meeting will relieve him 17 years.

VERSION OF THE FIFTH version of fifth six he could talk with this newspaper does not match the owner of the animal and the mayor. They, who would not identify, say they found the donkey alone through the streets of town and not mistreated. "Only we tie a rope to get it to stop. Do not we all." All six agreed that when she was found "and bleeding from below - alluding to the back -" and died "because she was old."

According to the EFE news agency reported sources of the Government Delegation in Extremadura, the veterinarian who runs the report Seprona reflects that the animal's death was caused by a heart attack. The document does not come, for example, in some aspects have been reported to the Civil Guard, as the fifth made it a stick through the rectum.

Officers have identified several minors who have not yet taken a statement, and so far, are blamed for an alleged misdemeanor for damage due to various damage allegedly done by the people.

The fifth and his parents, who apologize for what happened "assuming responsibility at all times they may have".

The council, meanwhile, shows its most "strong revulsion at this act of savagery and cruelty to animals" and announced that "do not hesitate to take stronger measures to unfortunate incidents are never repeated."

(i whant to see that. from Spain is only comes shit)

USA- ANTHONY BOURDAIN- THE STUPID BEAST

On Larry King Live, Bourdain had commented that it was okay for humans to kill animals for food because humans were designed to chase down “smaller and stupider” creatures.

“It was the “stupider” remark that caught my attention, and not just for Bourdain’s obvious grammatical shortcomings,” said Solomon.

Solomon then gave some wonderful facts on the intelligence of animals:

Pigs may be smarter than Bourdain:
“Pigs have the mental capacity of a four year-old human child and have beat humans in memory games.”

Dolphins are talking about Bourdain behind his back:
“Dolphins have a very distinct language that scientists now refer to as “dolphinese” which humans can’t decipher. For all our human knowledge, we have no idea how to understand what should be, according to Bourdain, a “stupider” means of communication.”

Pigeons are like men because they don’t ask for directions:
“Did you know, for example, that pigeons can fly thousands of miles to find the same roosting spot with no navigational difficulties? Some species of birds, like the Arctic Tern, make a 25,000-mile round-trip journey
every year. Many species use built-in ferromagnets to detect their orientation with respect to the Earth’s magnetic field. Can you do that?”

Only an idiot would call them stupid

USA- OREGON CITY OFFERS FREE CARE FOR PETS OF HOMELESS

The makeshift “clinic” location was a small building near Cascades Gateway Park — a southeast Salem camping area for some homeless people and their pets.

As dogs and cats received health exams, their owners socialized, ate spaghetti and talked about their pets.

These kinds of clinics, often supplemented by barbecues, have occurred monthly in Salem since May.

They are the result of teamwork by the Willamette Valley Animal Hospital, the Marion County animal shelter and Prodigal House Ministries, a nonprofit organization.

Besides the site near Cascades Gateway Park, clinics also have been held at downtown Salem locations and at Wallace Marine Park in West Salem.

Juan Lopez, a program organizer and veterinary dental technician, said the goal is to provide each pet with a general health exam, a complete set of vaccinations, flea control and deworming medications.

Pets also are spayed and neutered.

“They’re currently living in our green spaces, so we have to worry about transmittal of diseases to humans,” Lopez said, adding that regular veterinary care can reduce the risk of pets spreading worms, rabies and infectious viruses.

As it stands, the outreach program is providing ongoing care for about 80 animals owned by homeless people, Lopez said.

Donations pay for the program.

Thompson, who gets by on food stamps and financial support from her mother, said she avoids shelters because they don’t allow pets.

“A lot of people say ‘Get rid of them and go to a shelter,’” she said. “My question to them is, ‘Would you get rid of your children?’”

Chris Simpson, 22, brought his two cats — Midnight and Puffy — to Sunday’s clinic.

He said he rescued Midnight from mistreatment by a previous owner who fed her wine and burned her ears with candle wax.

ITALY- ANIMALS WITHOUT LIMITS

... helping animals in Naples, Italy area.

- Subsidizing existing spay, neuter and treatment clinics.

- Subsidizing exisiting adoption services.

- Finding sick, injured and often dying animals and providing the appropriate care.

Italy are a nation that abandons every year over 135,000 cats and dogs. There are over 600,000 stray dogs roaming free in Italy and only 33% are caught and taken into kennels. The Regions that have more strays in the territory are: Puglie 70,600; Campania: 70,000; Sicily: 68,000. Calabria 65,000; Lazio: 60,000. The South, as you can see, is the part of Italy more exposed to this problem. The South is even the area with the highest level of corruption and criminality.

The Italians living in an area were the mob exerts influence are over 13 millions. The equivalent of 22% of the Nation. The mob is present in over 610 Italian districts. The Italian mobs: Cosa nostra (Sicily) , Camorra (Campania), N’drangheta (Calabria) and the Sacra Corona Unita (Puglie) have a turnover of over 130 billion of euros

AA Gill shot baboon 'to see what it would be like to kill someone'

In a Sunday Times column, Gill recounted in detail how he shot the creature from 250 yards while hunting in "a truck full of guns and other blokes" in Tanzania. He said he felt the urge to be "a recreational primate killer" before shooting the animal through the lung.

"This is morally completely indefensible," said Steve Taylor, a spokesman for the League Against Cruel Sports. "If he wants to know what it like to shoot a human, he should take aim at his own leg. When man interacts with animals he owes a duty of care. If you are killing to eat, that is a different matter. This is killing for fun".

Gill admitted he had no good reason for killing the animal. "I know perfectly well there is absolutely no excuse for this," he wrote. "There is no mitigation. Baboon isn't good to eat, unless you're a leopard. The feeble argument of culling and control is much the same as for foxes: a veil for naughty fun. I wanted to get a sense of what it might be like to kill someone, a stranger. You see it in all those films: guns and bodies, barely a close-up of reflection or doubt. What does it really feel like to shoot someone, or someone's close relative?"

UK- Support Sarah Whitehead

Sarah Whitehead is a committed vegan activist who has dedicated her life to saving animals and helping people. She worked tirelessly as a nurse whilst rescuing and rehoming abused and neglected animals, as well as campaigning against the notorious Huntingdon Life Sciences. She is not someone to sit back and let animals be tortured and abused, she stands up and fights wherever she sees injustice and never puts herself first

Sarah had been informed about an abused beagle. It was living outside in a wooden cage, and was muzzled at all times except for when it got to eat. The dog was made to wear an electric shock collar and the neighbours informed Sarah that they had witnessed beatings from its owners. The neighbours had also heard the dog screaming on many occasions.

The RSPCA had been called numerous times, but they failed to help this dog and left it with owners who had on occasions tied it to a radiator.

All avenues had been explored in trying to lift this animal from hell. The RSPCA, despite numerous complaints and visits to the owners, did nothing; even the police had been called by neighbours, but they just told them to call the RSPCA.

What else was Sarah to do, but rescue the beagle herself? How else could this beagle be saved? Knowing how much it was suffering, could anyone just leave this beagle to live in pain?

Sarah was already on a suspended sentence for rescuing animals from a notorious puppy farmer in West Sussex, which meant that if she re-offended within two years she would be sent to prison for that "crime". Even knowing this risk to her freedom, Sarah put the dog's life and well-being first and lifted him to freedom.

Unknown to Sarah she was under police surveillance during the rescue as part of Operation Achilles and the campaign against Huntingdon Life Sciences. Police followed her and watched her rescue the beagle, and then watched her take the dog to its second stage of its journey to it's new home.

However, once the beagle was handed over, instead of following the beagle in order to return it to its owner, they carried on following Sarah. Luckily this means that the beagle is still safe and living in a loving home.

Some time later once the police had finished following Sarah around she was arrested, the police weirdly tried to accuse her of stealing the dog so that she could sell it for £500 to raise money for SHAC (Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty) Where this sum of £500 came from is anyone's guess and it shows how little the police understand the concept of animal rights!

Sarah went on trial for burglary in June 2008. She pleaded not guilty to the offence as she believed she had not committed a crime in rescuing this beagle. She told the court she believed she had acted reasonably and honest and that it was the right thing to do because the police and RSPCA had failed to save this dog. Statements from the neighbours were read in court which described the cruelty to the dog, the beatings, and the screams but bizarrely the jury took the view that Sarah should have left the dog where it was and she was found guilty.

The judge sentenced Sarah to two years in prison, nine months of this is from the suspended sentence she was on, and the extra 1 1/3 years is for rescuing the beagle.

Lush bubble bath to support hunt saboteur campaign

The cosmetics company Lush is launching a bubble bath it hopes will raise tens of thousands of pounds for anti-blood sports activists who sabotage fox hunts.

The Hunt Saboteurs Association will be the latest beneficiary of proceeds from Lush, the ethical producer of handmade soaps which has gained a reputation for backing radical protest groups.

The Hunt Saboteurs Association will be the latest beneficiary of proceeds from Lush, the ethical producer of handmade soaps which has gained a reputation for backing radical protest groups.

The citronella and peppermint bubble bath, called The Fabulous Mr Fox, will arrive on the shelves in the coming weeks and will be on sale until Boxing Day, a traditional day for fox hunts. The company hopes the product will raise £50,000 for the activists, and said they money will be used to fund vehicles and video equipment.

Mark Constantine, the 59-year-old co-founder of Lush, which is based in Poole, Dorset, has previously donated large portions of his profits to human rights groups, animal welfare organisations and environmental protesters such as Plane Stupid, who promote non-violent civil disobedience to opposed airport expansion

USA- Continental Airline Refuses to Fly Pitbull Puppy

Joey, an adorable little 4-month-old, 26-lb pitbull puppy rescued from a Marysville, CA shelter. Dawn Capp, who runs The Chako Rescue Association for the American Pit Bull Terrier has been fostering this little cutie since he was just four weeks old and was thrilled when a Tennessee woman, Libby Sherrill, visited Joey, fell in love with him and decided she wanted to share her home and live with him.

All was well until Sherrill tried to take her new furry family member home. Continental Airline refused to allow her to take him due to a ban on flying pitbulls. Actually they will but only puppies and they much be under 6-month-old and weigh less than 20-lbs. Other than that, pitbulls are banned from flying Continental Airlines, a ban that had been in pace for years

“I think Continental’s restriction is ridiculous,” said Capp. “They will fly a 90-pound German Shepherd. They’ll fly a Rottweiler. They’ll fly just about every breed of dog but not a 4-month old pit bull puppy. I can’t imagine what a pit bull puppy would do that a 90-pound German Shepherd wouldn’t do.”

“I honestly don’t see how this is a safety issue,” she said. “He doesn’t have adult teeth yet. He still has his puppy teeth. What they’re doing is discriminating against a breed of dog.”

Now it’s time to get the word out to all pitbull and dog lovers to stay away from Continental. They are the only airline that flies pets which has enacted this type of restriction. Don’t pitbull have enough obstacles in their way without airlines discriminating against them now? More BSL BS!!

As for Joey, he had to be booked on a flight on American Airlines and a cost of about $275, a significant increase since the owner is flying too, to fly to his new home and Sherrill had to go home without her new baby and wait a few days to be reunited with Joey.

This story still has a wonderfully happy ending for one rescued puppy but let’s make sure it’s not so happy for Continental Airlines! Help to get the word out about their pitbull ban and let’s show them how we feel.

USA- Tacoma group seeks donations to care for canines saved from euthanasia

Ebony sat quietly in her space waiting for someone to pay attention.

Jacob rested in a lying position, likely in pain from the hematoma in his ear.

Chelsea shied away from contact, preferring to observe visitors from a distance.

Each has a different story. Each is a rescued dog, brought to Tacoma this week by a group of animal lovers disheartened by the closure of a German shepherd dog rescue facility in Ennis, Texas, 40 miles south of Dallas

The financial collapse of the 8-year-old Camp Wolfgang sent coast-to-coast shivers through the dog-loving world amid dark predictions that euthanasia awaited the roughly 200 suddenly homeless canines.

A nationwide rescue effort ensued. Enter Melissa Lingk and K9 Northwest, a Tacoma-based training, boarding, pet- sitting and just plain dog-loving group of young men and women.

All but four of the remaining 26 dogs brought to Tacoma now are in foster homes. About half of the foster parents are looking to adopt. But there still is a need for four foster homes and permanent parents for up to 13 dogs, Lingk said.

You can make an adoption application online. But you won’t be approved unless you pass a home inspection and interview, she said.

Many of the dogs were in need of much veterinary care. Ear mites robbed their hearing and created hematomas. One dog was so matted it took three hours to comb the mess out.

K9 Northwest got help from area clubs and rescue groups and donations from dogstuff.com.

The group is working on official nonprofit recognition but doesn’t have the 501(c)3 status that qualifies it to accept tax-deductible donations.

K9 Northwest’s heart is certainly in the right place, said Kathleen Olson, executive director of the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County. But she worries that an underfunded rescue group could be overwhelmed by the demands of such an undertaking. And she’s always concerned about bringing more dogs into an area where loving homes for unwanted pets are difficult to find.

Lingk, 29, who apprenticed as a dog trainer at age 14 and says she’s been working professionally in dog training for more than a dozen years, has a ready answer to the question of why.

“We love shepherds so much, and no one was able to care for these particular animals,” she said. “These dogs were going to die.”

Schwarzenegger Sides with Animal Abusers

Having received overwhelming bi-partisan support in both chambers of the Legislature, what Schwarzenegger's veto of AB 243 suggests is a shocking lack of understanding, or just plain ignorance, of the actual language of the bill. But whether through ignorance or intent, his decision to side with the interests of convicted animal abusers over the interests of California's abused animals (and the constituents who love them) is certainly reproachable.

The Legislature has one more chance to fix Schwarzenegger's blunder - by overriding his veto.

Legal Charges Filed to Free Queenie the Elephant

Queenie, the elephant that was left behind tied to a tree after two other elephants were rescued from their abusive owner last August, will hopefully get her freedom soon.

In Defense of Animals (IDA), the organization that has worked for two years trying to rescue the three elephants announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) filed formal charges against their handler, Wilbur Davenport, in order to rescue Queenie.

Davenport, who operates a company called Maximus “Tons of Fun” was charged with multiple violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act related to the care of the three elephants named Tina, Jewel and Queenie.

Slaughterhouse, a place of unimaginable suffering and death

russia circus cruelty october 2009

Hundreds of animals are being forced to perform death-defying stunts at packed circuses in Russia, where there are no laws to ban animal cruelty.

Sky News has visited the Zapashny Brothers' Circus in Ivanov, near Moscow, where the lions and tigers are the main attraction and thousands flock to see them.

Circuses like this attract huge crowds, in contrast with Europe where the introduction of animal welfare laws has outlawed shows in most countries.

In Russia, there are over 300 animals performing in circuses and there is little or no opposition to it.

The Zapashny brothers come from a long line of animal tamers and they say their love for these creatures is reciprocated.

Sky News obtained access to a rehearsal for their new show, in which the big cats are reluctantly forced with whips and sticks to perform in water.

The backstage living conditions are a depressing sight. The animals pace up and down in the minimal space they have. Many are visibly stressed.

But Askold Zapashny insists they are happy. ( Jerk)

He said: "The animals enjoy performing. They don't have to be forced. They run around when they get on the stage. They are not scared and they don't have to be pushed."

The few in Russia who oppose the use of animals in entertainment have a tough quest.
VITA is a Moscow based animal welfare charity.

Its president, Irina Novozhilova, said: "People's conscience is not at the level where they see circuses as cruel.

"To the contrary, there is a belief here in Russia that children need to be taken to circus so they are taught how to love animals.

"But circuses cannot teach you anything. Children are seeing slaves, not animals."

An average of 20,000 people a week attend the circus we visited. As long as the audiences keep coming, the animals will keep performing.

Danish mink farmers demand interdiction of TV documentary

On Thursday the Union of Danish mink farmers demanded the interdiction of a TV documentary showing the living conditions of these animals.

They argue that the footage was produced by illegal means (breaking into the farm).

The authors say that the documentary 'Operation X' of the Danish TV Station TV2, which will be aired on 27 October, is to inform about the sufferings of these animals and the violation of existing laws.

USA- REWARD OFFERED IN DOGFIGHTING CASE, NM

Source: KOAT.com, October 12, 2009

Detectives need your help to keep a South Valley dogfighting investigation from going cold. They are offering cash to help generate tips.

Last month, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office busted a dogfighting operation in a southwest Albuquerque home.

Officers arrested six people, but investigators said there were at least 40 people there that night.

Investigators said most of the activity was caught on cell phone cameras, but that little of that video has surfaced.

“We know it was filmed. So, if you can bring us something, even if it was from the past, it can help us out a lot from this point forward,” said Det. Amy Dudewicz, Bernalillo Co. Sheriff’s Office.

There is a reward of up to $5,000 for information in this case.

Call 877-5-HUMANE if you have information. Tips can remain anonymous.

The mind boggles at the brutality involved in ripping out the bull's tongue, gouging out his eyes, suffocating him with soil, causing excruciating pain to his genitals, and kicking and trampling him to his eventual death. SIGN -Petition link in comments!

The First Fruits Festival is a traditional Zulu ceremony whereby young men celebrate their coming of age by killing a bull with their bare hands. That's around 40 boys of around 14 years old suffocating, gorging, ripping apart a bull with nothing but their own hands. The NSPCA (Southern African National Councils of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has been appealing to Governments about this for the last ten years now, but nobody seems to want to do anything as it is culturally sensitive. President Zuma of South Africa is in fact himself Zulu. To quote the NSPCA "Incidents to which the NSPCA has objection and believes are violations of the Animals Protection Act No 71 of 1962 include: - choking the animal by pushing sand or mud down its throat, gouging out its eyes to down the animal, twisting its testicles and tying its penis until the animal succumbs and is then jumped on, kicked and beaten until it dies, usually about 40 minutes after the event began."

I believe that media and world attention is one way in which we stand a chance of bringing this cruelty to an end. Everybody hates what happens to the dolphins in Japan, but nobody really knew about it until it was exposed in the film the Cove. Please, sign the petition and forward it to as many people as you can to highlight this issue

SIGN THE PETITION AND SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THIS CRUELTY IN SOUTH AFRICA. THIS MUST BE STOPED RIGHT NOW. SHAME ....

New Investigation Underscores Reasons To Dump Dairy

Most people understand why I don’t eat meat, but when I explain that I also don’t eat cheese or other dairy products, some people seem a little baffled. “Why, do they milk the cows too hard?” is a question I’ve been asked on more than one occasion. This shows just how far removed many people are from what they eat. They like to think of cows frolicking in open green pastures and being gently milked by kindly old farmers in overalls.

That only happens in storybooks.

On modern dairy farms, most cows are kept in feces- and urine-saturated grassless lots. Cows give milk for the same reason humans do—to feed their babies. But dairy farmers artificially impregnate cows every year so that they'll produce a steady supply of milk for humans. A typical factory-farmed dairy cow will give birth three or four times in her five-year life. None of her babies will taste her milk.

USA- Chris Rock, Jay Leno Trash Pitbulls, Think Vick’s Crimes Funny

A short segment on The Jay Leno Show during an interview with Chris Rock has got animal activists, dog lovers and pitbull lovers up in arms and rightfully so. I know comedians think they can joke and make fun of anything and everything but some things just are not funny and should not be joked or laughed about. Michael Vick’s crimes for one and as if pitbulls aren’t maligned enough, Chris Rock and Jay Leno had a good laugh. Well, I’m not laughing and I can tell you that there’s a whole lot of people out there who aren’t laughing either. We’re pissed and think torturing and killing innocent animals is just no joking matter!

Here’s what was said on the show;

Jay Leno: “It’s amazing to me that you mistreat a dog and you lose your career and go to jail for two years.”

Chris Rock: “What the hell did Michael Vick do, man? A dog, a pit bull ain’t even a real dog. A pit bull, that’s the white stuff. Dogs are white mans best friend – dogs have never been good to black people.”

Wow, that’s funny, isn’t it? NOT!!

Now, if you think it was funny, as much of the audience obviously did, just did back and chuckle and do nothing. But if you’re pissed and think it was over the line, not something to joke about, then you can do something about it!

USA- Dog Dragged to Death from a Bicycle

On March 17, Antonio Ray, 37, allegedly dragged a pit bull from his bicycle through the Ardmore, Oklahoma city streets. Many witnesses called police, and one took a picture of the incident using his cell phone. A witness described the horrifying scene, “[The dog’s] arms were behind it, its chest was on the ground and there were streaks of blood. And we went back afterwards and measured it, four-tenths of a mile he dragged this dog. The pads of its feet were gone and it was laying in a pool of blood." Authorities took the tortured dog to a nearby animal shelter, but he died before he could be treated

Vanishing Giants

The Asian elephant, constantly under threat from poachers and a fast shrinking habitat faces a more serious threat one that comes from its custodians.

This news clip shows the cruel and archaic methods of capture that exist in India. Within 3 days of its release, the Indian government suspended all capture of wild elephants. Individuals in charge of the botched capture operation were suspended.

The news clip created international furor. International news agencies took it up and activists from all over the world joined in. IFAW undertook a global signature campaign against elephant capture.

In India changes in policies and rules were made at a national level ensuring that all future captures take place with modern facilities and in the presence of experts to avoid trauma and cruelty after capture.

Singapore: 'Break The Tradition, Spare The Sharks'

An estimated 100 million sharks are killed each year to meet demand for shark fin soup, and Singapore is the world's third-largest shark fin trading centre, according to UN's Food and Agriculture Organization.

"This tradition is not only cruel, it is wasteful and hugely destructive, because when sharks die, the entire marine ecosystem also collapses. It is time for us responsible global citizens to break this tradition" said Mr. Louis Ng, Founder and Executive Director of ACRES.

This weekend, ACRES is encouraging people to symbolically break this habit, by smashing a shark fin soup bowl, sending a message to the world that sharks are more valuable than soup.

France: L214 has brought animal cruelty charges against the abattoir Charal

The animal protection organization L214 produced an undercover documentary about slaughter procedures within the abattoir Charal, a meat company with a good reputation in France. The researcher has worked three weeks in the slaughterhouse.

The following breaches of legislation were discovered:

-During standard slaughter, cattle were not killed immediately after stunning.

-During ritual killings cattle were suspended before the end of bleeding. Furthermore, the restraining equipment is situated facing the slaughter-chain, which increases the distress of the animals being forced into the trap.
These breaches are increasing the suffering of animals during slaughter.

L214 has brought animal cruelty charges against the abattoir and is questioning the veterinary supervision.
