CHINA- UPDATE - International Campaign Against the Return of Bullfights

International Movement Against Bullfights www.iwab.org

On the 17th of November 2009 we launched a campaign against proposed bullfighting in China
http://www.iwab.org/campaign.html

This campaign is being noticed by the Chinese authorities as you will see from the newspaper article below.
Please, if you haven't protested yet then do so now. If you have already written, please write again. We must maintain the pressure.

Animal lovers seeing red over bullfight ring

Animal rights activists are trying to stop construction of a bull-fighting ring planned on the outskirts of Beijing.

The Global Times learned of the project after a news agency in Spain announced plans for a Spanish theme park near the Great Wall.

Although bullfights have lost popularity in Spain, a bullring in Beijing this October would be a major tourist attraction, according to a report by the Spanish news agency EFE.

In Spanish bullfighting tradition, the matador kills the bull and the animal's ears and tail are cut off as trophies.

The Spanish promoters say they want to train Chinese matadors.

Manolo Sanchez, a Spanish matador, said last November that he has reached an agreement with the government of Huairou district in suburban Beijing. He said local officials believe that bullfighting, a cultural pillar of traditional Spain, would help put the district on the map, according to the report.

"We believe Spanish-style bullfighting would be embraced by many supporters in China," he was quoted as saying. "In fact, some television stations in China broadcast Spanish bullfights regularly."

'Tarnished image'

The bullfighting arena, with a seating capacity of 7,000, is scheduled to open with two bullfights in October. Sixteen bullfights are planned for next year, according to El Mundo, a daily newspaper in Spain.

Three Huairou officials involved with the bullfighting project seemed uncomfortable discussing the project.

Zhou Huaiming, director of the district commission on science and technology, told the Global Times that he is uncertain over the current status of the project. He said he has not been involved in the planning since he and two other officials returned from Spain last year.

"We do have a plan and we have heard many opposition voices," he said.

He declined to provide details on the deal with Spain. The other two officers remained silent about this project.

It is not the first time that Spanish-style bullfighting has raised eyebrows in China.

Early in 2004, the Daxing district of Beijing ditched plans to host a bullfight performance in a new, 6,400-seat bullring at Beijing's Wild Animal Park. They abandoned their plans after animal rights activists complained that bullfights had "the potential to tarnish Beijing's and China's image."

Protest planned

The new project in Huairou faces similar challenges.

On November 17, the International Movement Against Bullfights (IMAB) launched an online campaign calling on Chinese authorities to stop what the group called a "barbarity."

"We must at all cost prevent this project from going ahead. Otherwise we will have another country with bullfights," the group declared.

They posted emails to Chinese journalists and to official websites, asking people to send protest letters. Thoughtfully, a sample protest letter was provided.

"The Chinese authorities may have been flooded with emails from all over the world,"

Maria Lopes, coordinator of IMAB, told the Global Times Tuesday.

Animal rights activists in China have taken their own actions.

Li Xiaoxi, a professor at the Air Force Command Institute and a former member of CPPCC Beijing, helped block Daxing's plan to build a bullring. Li told the Global Times that she and other members of CPPCC Beijing are now working to block the latest project.

"We found out that local officers have different opinions on this project," Li said. "I don't understand why they still want to have a bullring when even some places in Spain are considering banning it."

She first learned of the project from other animal rights activists on the Internet and immediately contacted local officers to complain.

"They turned a deaf ear to me, so I keep calling, calling and calling them," she said.

According to EFE's report, about 100 cows and 100 bulls are awaiting shipment to China in January so that matadors would be fighting bulls bred in China.

Li said she feels anxiety over bulls, because more bulls will enable the bullfight promoters to build other bullrings in other cities.

It is not known if the bulls are on their way to China or are already here.

With no response from the local government, Li sent a complaint letter to another member of CPPCC Beijing last December, asking for help.

The letter stated, "Bullfighting is a very cruel and brutal sport; even its motherland Spain is considering banning this controversial sport. Daxing has set an example. Such a bullfight should not appear in Huairou."

She said the proposal has been submitted to relevant departments last December and might be discussed at the upcoming "Two Sessions" in March, the annual meetings of China's top legislative and political advisory body.

Mang Ping, a professor at the Central Institute of Socialism, told the Global Times Tuesday that she is totally against the idea of bullfights in China.

"They are driven by the profit motive to import such a bloody business project.how could a local government face the public accusations?" she asked.

Bullfighting has been under fire in Spain.

Hundreds of animal rights activists stripped down to their underwear and splashed fake blood on their bodies during a protest outside the capital Madrid's bullring last May, AFP said.

About 30 percent fewer bullfighting performances were staged across Spain last year due to the recession, AFP reported.

USA- ADOPTIONS FROM PASADENA HUMANE ORG

Sadly, Cupcake & Max's elderly owner could no longer care for them. They said both of them are housebroken, shy at first but friendly and loving, great around their grandkids, and every other person and dog they met too. Here at the shelter both are very shy in their kennel, but take them out and you'll see their sweet loving nature! Max (A264096) went out with our mobile van and did really well. Both dogs weigh 20 pounds and we think they are brothers. You can see Cupcake (A264098)'s cuteness in his video!

A264007 friendly gentle Chow Golden mix

What a lovely dog! He gets along with other dogs, seems housebroken, enjoys petting, and walks well on leash.

This 15-pound dog is really unique looking and adorable! He's full of energy and very friendly & outgoing with everyone he meets.

A263813 half-blind happy boy

What a happy little cutie! He weighs 13 pounds and all of that wiggles in happiness when he's out running around saying "Hi!" to all his fans in the clinic. He has an eye condition which is respondoing well to treatment (daily drops) that would need to continue for the rest of his life. It has left him partially blind, but as you can see in his video, it really doesn't bother him a bit! He's gotten along super well with the other small dogs he's met too, as well as the clinic cat. PLEASE NOTE: to meet this cutie make sure to ask for him, as he is not out in the main kennels.

A264082_sweet_Houndmix_girl.mov

So elegant! This sleek girl is gentle and very well-behaved. She knows all her commands in Chinese, and is billingual in English for some of them too! She know sit and how to walk on a leash without pulling, enjoys attention and going on walks. She is (understandably) a little nervous in the shelter, and is hoping to be adopted by a loving home very soon!

A264271 wow those ears are cute

Look at those adorable ears! This fun little 6 year old dog is as friendly as he is cute too. He's kenneled with another little dog and they get along super well.

ABC News and Nightline -- shocking Dairy abuse -- Tuesday, 1/26/10

From a marketing perspective, milk has about as squeaky clean an image as you'll find. But behind the smiling celebrity milk moustaches, is there a darker side to dairy?

A Brian Ross Blotter investigation tonight pulls back the curtain on what critics call dairy "factory farms," featuring graphic video of disturbing deletion treatment of milk cows at the Willet Dairy in East Genoa, New York.

The footage was shot by an investigator for the animal rights group Mercy for Animals posing undercover who was hired at the dairy as a mechanic. One clip shows the controversial process of tail-docking, pictured above and described fully in a Blotter report here. The other, embedded below, shows a cow in obvious pain as it horns are burned off.

Lyndon Odell, CEO of Willet Dairy said that he prides himself on the conditions of his dairy and uses the latest technology to keep his cows healthy. He explained that tail-docking and burning off horns are common in the industry and are not abusive of the animals.

Tune in tonight for the full investigation.

CANADA- Island Dogz Rescue

Located on beautiful Vancouver Island in BC, Canada. There is no physical shelter, as all dogs awaiting adoption are placed in loving foster homes. We rescue locally, as well as bring in dogs from shelters in the US and Taiwan. If we have the space and available resources, we will also accept owner surrenders as a last option. Our dogs are fostered in loving home and are included in the family's daily lives. During this time, they are assessed for behaviour, temperament and health. When these issues are resolved, the dog is then ready for their new furever home. At this time applicants are considered and those that are approved will have a home visit and a meet & greet before placement is considered. All going well, a new furever match is made.

Dogs are not placed on a first come - first serve basis, but will be placed in the home we find that best meets the individual requirements of each dog. For some that means no small children or small pets, other may require a 6' solid fence, others for someone to be home almost all the time. Then there are easy fits that will adapt to almost any home. Each dog is unique and will be homed accordingly. If your application isn't the right fit for a particular dog, it may be perfect for another! Or, we can put you in touch with another rescue that may have good options for you.

*Remember, when you adopt a rescue dog you save TWO LIVES: the dog you adopt, and the next needy dog that can leave a shelter and be placed in the newly opened foster spot

Why bring dogs from Asia when there are dogs in North America that are homeless or in shelters?

At Island Dogz, we believe that Dog Rescue is a calling from above and we are called to help the dogs in Asia, where others rescue dogs from US shelters, or from Mexico, or one type of purebred, or small dogs, or seniors, or from Northern Canada. Just as some Missionaries travel to destinations thousands of miles from home, and some go to the nearest low income community centre, some go to rural jungles and some to the inner city. We each have different groups we are called to help and after much research and weighing the pros and cons, we decided Asia, and specifically Taichung Universal Animal Protection Association ( TUAPA ).

This shelter high upon a mountain on this tropical South Eastern Asian island, is "home" for over 1000 animals; mostly dogs, and a few cats. TUAPA is run by a handful of incredibly devoted workers and volunteers that struggle to spread their time, love, funds and care to all their "doggies". They also have a program to try to help control the growth of the stray/feral dog population. Volunteers go out into the community and catch dogs for what is known as CNR or Catch-Neuter-Return. Dogs they come across with the greatest needs are brought back to "the mountain" shelter. Here they receive medical attention, immunizations and a spot in the shelter (if there is room of course). TUAPA is a "NO KILL" shelter, which means they care for a dog for life, unlike the city pounds that euthanize an unclaimed/unadopted dog after a week to 10 days. The dogs here are not in spacious kennels with raised Kuranda beds, blankets, good quality kibble, daily walks, toys and treats like the SPCA here so wonderfully provides for dogs in local shelters. TUAPA dogs are in raised metal cages, row upon row, or in groups on concrete floors, patiently waiting for someone to take them out to the yard once a week. And these dogs are the lucky ones!

Thousands of dogs roam the city streets and rural areas of Asia. They are considered by many as little better than rats, and are treated accordingly. Many are run over on the crowded streets, some accidentally, but often on purpose. Others are caught in wire snares and bear (gin) traps. These leave many of the dogs alive but with serious injuries that go untreated. Dogs with amputations are common. Another source of injury, both accidental and on purpose, are rubber bands. Some dogs have the bands cutting into their muzzles or necks from scrounging in discarded lunch boxes held closed by the bands. Others have had the bands put on them for reasons I cannot fathom. They bind into the flesh where ever they are placed; muzzle neck, tail, limbs etc.

Although eating dog meat has become less common , there are still underground butchers and markets for the meat of dogs. It is known as "fragrant meat" and is eaten especially in the winter months, as it is thought by some to keep the body warm. Some dogs are "farmed" and others are snatched off the street, and they are kept in cramped cages with little care to their condition to await their fate. The slaughtering process can be excruciating as some feel that the meat is greatly enhanced by the dog's body producing high amounts of adrenaline...which is produced when they experience great pain. Our very first shipment of dogs from Asia included a wonderful young Siberian Husky that was broken out of such a slaughterhouse by extreme rescuers known (loosely translated) as "compassionate mothers".

We were also drawn to the hearts of the workers at TUAPA, they keep track of EVERY dog they send. They keep in touch with rescues like Island Dogz, that offer hope to their beloved "doggies". They post pictures and videos of the dogs before and after leaving Taiwan, they work tirelessly to make sure each dog has all medical needs met and all paperwork ready for their trip. They go the extra mile to ensure the dogs arrive safely and comfortably. Each dog arrives in a spacious crate with water, chew bones, absorbent pads incase of accidents, new harness, leash and ID tag. The passenger that escorts them on their adventure brings complete folders with all immigration and medical records. After the dog is adopted by a new furever family, they ask that they still receive pictures and updates as they really do care about each individual dog even though the numbers passing through the shelter are massive. We definitely wanted to be apart of a team with that kind of devotion.

Stop 2010 World Cup Animal Sacrifices

South African traditional leaders intend performing ritual animal slaughters in order to bless Soccer Stadiums for the 2010 World Cup. Zolani Mkiva, chairman of the Makhonya Royal Trust, said the tournament has to to be blessed in true “African style” and that they are going to slaughter cows in sacrifice at each of the 10 stadiums to be used for the event. The traditional sacrifice methods are grossly inhuman, and despite tradition, it is an unneeded act of cruelty.

Please End the Dolphin Killing

Each year from October through March, in small towns across Japan, thousands of dolphins and small whales are confined and brutally killed. These slaughters take place in fishing towns including Taiji, Iki, Ito, Futo and Izu. During those months, Japanese fishermen herd whole families and pods of dolphins, porpoises and small whales into shallow bays and mercilessly hack them to death. Most of these small cetaceans are sold as meat in restaurants and stores, while some are destined for a life in captivity.

How They Kill

The fishermen in villages like Taiji, go out in small boats to known dolphin migratory routes. Positioning their boats strategically, they space out to form a line and wait for the dolphins. When the dolphins arrive, the fishermen drop long metal pipes into the water, and by banging on the pipes they create a wall of sound. The sound interferes with the dolphins' ability to navigate - it disorients and panics them. The dolphins swim away from the sound, and the fisherman maneuver their boats herding them into a small shallow bay. Once in the bay, nets are drawn across the mouth of the bay to keep them penned in.

The fishermen usually injure a few of the captive dolphins with a spear thrust or a knife slash - dolphins will not abandon these wounded family members.

Elliot M. Katz: BLM has mismanaged public lands to benefit ranchers

When the government misinforms the public and puts special interests over what’s best for the general public, citizens become outraged. So it is with the government’s mismanagement of wild horses and burros.

Congress protected the wild horses as living symbols of freedom and important parts of our national heritage, but for nearly 40 years, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management has ignored this mandate.

The agency has mismanaged our public lands to cater to livestock and other commercial industries that use public lands for profit. The horses and the American public come out on the short end of this deal.

Each year, ranchers graze livestock on public lands for rock bottom rates, paying $1.35 per month per animal instead of the private-land rate of more than $13 per month per animal. The taxpayers further subsidize private ranchers through government programs that kill predators and remove wild horses and burros.

Sadly, President Obama sided with the special interests instead of the American public when he appointed Ken Salazar, a rancher, as secretary of the interior. What we’ve gotten under Mr. Salazar is more of the same government policies that favor the commercial interests over the public itself.

Absent in the government’s claims about wild horses is the fact that these iconic animals comprise less than one-half of one percent of large grazing animals on public lands, where horses are outnumbered by cattle at least 200 to 1.

The BLM currently authorizes livestock grazing on 160 million of the 256 million acres of public land it manages. Wild horses are allowed on just 26 million acres, land that is shared with livestock. The BLM scapegoats wild horses and burros for virtually all range deterioration, despite the agency’s own data showing that the majority of rangeland deterioration is caused by livestock.

More than a Dozen Dogs Stolen From Local Rescue

Johnson City police are investigating the theft of 14 dogs from a local dog rescue before dawn this morning. The police report says someone broke into the Cool School for Dogs business around 3:30 a.m.

The overnight staff member says she heard the dogs barking downstairs and went to check on them. She says she got into a scuffle with a man who cut her with a knife and that a van was backed-up to the door to load the dogs. Most of the 14 dogs that were taken were Doberman Pinschers.

"There is a chance some of the dogs escaped out the back gate, please be on the look out, they are very friendly dogs," said Brad Josselyn, the owner of Cool School for Dogs.

Several of the dogs have serious health conditions, one has only three legs and another is blind. The business is offering a sizable reward for information or the dogs return.

tourism australia use traumatized kangaroo to sell plane tickets

Saturday 16 & Sunday 17 January, 2010
Venue: The Paley Center for Media, Beverly Hills:

Tourism Australia had a huge kangaroo on the concrete - on a busy busy footpath, it even started raining.

The kangaroo was next to (8 to 10 feet away) from a busy busy street and was so traumatized it was rocking back and forth over and over again.

On Saturday it was running around and round in circles, chasing its tail in a craze.

Sunday (when a friend and I took the pics & video) a Tourism Australia Employee just stood around rolling their eyes while bystanders were clearly disturbed.

I am not affiliated with any activist groups, i am just someone who works in Beverly Hills, and had to walk past this atrocity 2 days in a row.

At one point one of the Australian Tourism worker rolled her eyes and called me 'pathetic' for caring about the animal that was clearly in distress.

I have contacted all local & Australian media and US Animal right groups, including PETA, SPCA, The Humane Society and Animal Liberation.
The Police, Fire Dept, and Animal Control are also aware of this disgusting act of cruelty in the name of Tourism Australia.

I am also sending all this media to Travel Agencies, Hotel Chains, and also NZ Media outlets, who I know will love to get some bad press on terrible Aussie tourism PR practices.

Is this REALLY going to get people to go to Australia?
It REALLY gives new meaning to the lyrics "Tie me kangaroo down Sport" doesn't it?

Jet2.com Brings (a) Pride to Yorkshire

Yorkshire’s airline to rescue 13 lions from run-down Romanian zoo

Friendly low fare airline, Jet2.com has pledged to fly a pride of neglected lions from a Romanian zoo to Yorkshire free of charge this February as part of, what is planned to be, the biggest ever big cat rescue to date.
Jet2.com has joined forces with Yorkshire Wildlife Park, who is leading the mission, to charter a one-off flight to rescue a pride of 13 lions which are being held in cramped conditions, facing an uncertain future at Oradea Zoo, Romania.
Under the supervision of leading wildlife veterinarians, the big cats, which range in age from one to 27 years old, will be flown to Doncaster Robin Hood Airport and re-housed at a specially built 10-acre enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, Doncaster.
Philip Meeson, Boss of Jet2.com said, “When we heard about the plight of the lions at the Romanian zoo, we immediately offered to provide a Jet2.com charter aircraft and the support of our highly trained staff free of charge to transport the big cats to their new home near Doncaster this February.”
“As Yorkshire’s leading leisure airline, it’s a great honour to be involved in what is looking to be one of the biggest ever cat rescues. We are working closely with the wildlife park to ensure the campaign runs as smoothly as possible so that these majestic animals will soon, quite literally, be the pride of Yorkshire.”
Cheryl Williams, Director of Yorkshire Wildlife Park said, “This is a huge project for the Park and we are extremely grateful to Jet2.com for chartering a flight specifically for these magnificent creatures that desperately need our help.
“Without Jet2.com’s generosity, we would now be facing a long and arduous journey by road which would have been particularly treacherous with temperatures now dropping to minus 20 throughout central Europe. We just can’t thank them enough.”
John Minion, Animal Director at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, commented on his visit to Oradea Zoo, “The zoo is in a very poor state of repair, with lack of money for even food for the animals. The Romanian zoo now must now abide to European legislation; therefore these issues are now being addressed, which is why we have planned this mission.”
“Despite the dreadful living conditions, their spirit was still very evident as seen by one of the lionesses who came over to greet us, purring like a family cat. Some of them had health problems that veterinary care, good diet, exercise and appropriate housing will help greatly.”
Yorkshire Wildlife Park who has raised over £120,000 for the welfare mission, but is still in need of another £30,000 to pay for veterinary care, building a lion house, transportation costs and creating the reserve for the big cats. Further donations can be made at www.lionrescue.co.uk

Clearing Out Gassing Shelter - Please Read!

On January 22nd, 2010 Help Save One with the help of good hearted people will clear out Gaston County shelter. Gaston is a GASSING shelter.

Our commitment is to clear the shelter out of any urgent dogs. This will only work if we network this and people are aware of what is going on.

Its about time those dogs got the attention they deserve. Its also about time that the old hound, pit bull, mixed breed, or black dog gets picked to go to a safe place. Its also about time people know about gassing. Maybe (just maybe) it will put some pressure on spay/neuter laws to go into effect and enforced.

We will not leave any urgent dog behind. NO DOG WILL BE LEFT BEHIND. If any dog is unadoptable it will be HUMANELY put down or a sanctuary found. Temperament testing will take place by a qualified individual.

UK-Foxhunting - Cameron wants to make this legal again

Another newly posted video showing the reality of what Tory leader David Cameron represents. These are the people who will have their man in Downing Street should the Tories take power.

PLEASE HELP STOP THAT CALAMITY FROM HAPPENING!

This is footage that the media will not show (as the majority of the media will protect these cruel and violent people and their Tory friends at all costs) so we are using You Tube to get it out to the public ahead of the election.

Shocking scenes show the true face of hunting, not the sanitised version that is all the public are ever shown by the media.

This is what David Cameron thinks should be legal.

CANADA-Home, Home on the Range

Some people in Canada just don't get it. Although health officials have banned the sale of unpasteurized milk, a British Columbia dairy co-op called "Home on the Range" has 400 members who split 30 liters of raw milk produced each day by the dairy farm's 22 cows.

Coliform bacteria are microorganisms which originate in cow colons. Yes,Virgina, there's poop in that milk.
In British Columbia, milk cannot be sold legally if the coliform count exceeds 1,000 bacteria per liter.

On January 8, 2010, milk from Home on the Range was tested and found to be contaminated with bovine feces. In fact, the coliform count exceeded 570,000 per liter in one sample, and 950,000,000 in a second sample. Nearly one billion infectious germs and they call their
raw milk wholesome?

The motto of the province of British Columbiais unique: "Splendor Without Diminishment."

That represents an irony for the children who have become ill from this raw milk dairy's
milk, particularly the well-publicized case of one eight-year-old girl who may never
recover from her Christmas, 2009 consumption of E. coli and camplyobacter milk from Home
on the Range dairy. The splendor of her young life has forever been diminished.

Disappointment Valley... A Modern Day Western - Trailer

America's wild horses are in jeopardy! Disappointment Valley exposes mismanagement and corruption within the Bureau of Land Management.

Here's how you can help:

1) Call President Obama (202-456-1111) and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar (202-208-3100). Demand a Congressional investigation into the Bureau of Land Management. Ask for independent studies on statistics of the wild horses and do NOT rely on the BLM statistics. They are flawed and misrepresent the truth.

The Oklahoma Prison Rodeo: State-Sponsored Cruelty

Rodeo Betrays Corrections Mandate to Reform and Rehabilitate

The Oklahoma State Penitentiary's (OSP) Annual Outlaw Rodeo in McAlester, OK proudly touts itself as the only "Behind the Walls" prison rodeo. That's not exactly a bragging point.

This gladiator-style cruelty contest has been reinforcing felons' aggression since 1940 under the guise of "tradition". Inmates are brought in from 10 prisons around the state to compete against each other and the animals.

Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry, Director Justin Jones, and Warden Marty Sirmons should be ashamed to be spending taxpayer dollars teaching violent offenders new ways to abuse, with innocent animals being the victims--at least for now. It is a well-known fact that abuse again animals is a precursor to violent acts against humans.

By sponsoring a rodeo for inmates this maximum security penitentiary sends the message that the prison and the state of Oklahoma condones violence against animals, flying in the face of a prison’s mission to reform and rehabilitate criminals. Violence is violence, whether it's committed against human or non-human animals.

Prison is supposed to rehabilitate criminals. Instead the OSP Prison Rodeo is teaching inmates how to be more violent. The message these prisoners receive is that being as cruel and violent as possible is the way to get ahead. Instead of a rodeo, the prisons should have programs that allow inmates to care for animals, while learning a usable skill at the same time.

During a time of budget cuts and manpower-shortage in Oklahoma’s prison system, the Corrections Department spent more than $15,000 in overtime alone for security related to the prison rodeo in 2004.

USA-$1,000 reward offered for info on who glued cat to Hwy. 60

A reward is being offered in hopes of finding out who glued a 7-month-old cat to the side of a southern Minnesota highway.

The cat, stuck by his nose, was discovered Dec. 18 by a woman traveling to Sioux Falls, said Rosey Quinn of the city's Second Chance Rescue Center, where the orange-and-white male tabby was brought by the traveler. He died five days later.

A man from Yankton, S.D., has offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the person or people responsible, Quinn said. She said that the remote location of where the cat was found, without any identification, has her convinced that he was purposely glued to the road.

The "extremely stressed-out" animal was treated by a veterinarian, but he died the next week, Quinn said.

Stop Animals From Suffering at the Manila Zoo

After a life filled with suffering, boredom, and isolation, Sisi, the Manila Zoo’s lone orangutan, has died. At the Manila Zoo, Sisi was denied the opportunity to fulfill her most basic needs. Since 1981, she had been incarcerated in a tiny, litter-filled concrete-and-steel enclosure. Sisi was continually on display in a cage that was surrounded by noisy souvenir stands and food vendors, and she was provided with nothing to hold her interest, help her pass the time, or stimulate her keen senses. Although orangutans are tree-dwelling animals, Sisi spent her life on the ground or clinging to cage bars.

Animals at the Manila Zoo are housed in cramped, barren cages that can’t compare to their natural habitats. Many of the species housed at the Manila Zoo roam territories of hundreds of kilometers in the wild, but the entire Manila Zoo measures only 0.055 square kilometers. Many animals are exhibiting neurotic behavior, such as constant pacing, swaying their heads, and walking in small circles. Because of the lack of funding and resources, the zoo’s infrastructure has deteriorated and conditions for animals have grown steadily worse.

Recently, Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim announced a desire to acquire more animals for the Manila Zoo—and even requested an elephant from Thailand Ambassador to the Philippines Kulkumut Singhara Na Ayudhaya. Given the zoo’s decrepit condition, it would be extremely cruel to subject even more animals to such miserable conditions. PETA Asia-Pacific and nine other Philippines-based animal protection groups—Animal Kingdom Foundation Inc., Animal Welfare Coalition (AWC), CARA Welfare Phils (Compassion And Responsibility for Animals), International Wildlife Coalition Trust, LovePets.com, Network for Animals, Palawan Animal Welfare Association Inc., the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), and SAFE International Monitoring Program—have cosigned a petition urging Mayor Lim to abandon plans to import more animals for the Manila Zoo.

USA- Woman seeking donations of canine garb to help warm dogs of homeless

Kelly Tomke is on a crusade.

She wants to help the dogs of the homeless stay warm this winter.

Her campaign started shortly after Thanksgiving when she passed a homeless man sitting with his canine companion near her Golden Hill home.

Ever since, she has been asking folks to donate canine sweater castoffs (or any dog-related items, new or used leashes, collars, blankets, beds, etc.) that she and her beret-wearing

poodle, Bonaparte, can distribute to homeless owners of dogs. She calls her project: “Keep Woofy Warm.”

Tomke posts fliers at dog-friendly businesses downtown, runs weekly ads on Craigslist and distributes the donated items through an East Village dog groomer who works with the homeless.

“People tend to keep their dog’s items after their dog has passed on and wouldn’t mind giving those items to charity,” Tomke says, adding that dogs also grow out of their clothes or just won’t wear them. So far, Tomke, who knits dog sweaters and baby clothes as a hobby and fledgling business, has taken in about 30 sweaters and numerous other items. She sees a need for many more, however. “I’d love to see this effort take off,” Tomke says. She can be contacted at ktomke@gmail.com.

Antibiotic Recall in Canada

DVM360.com reports that the antibiotic Longisil is being recalled in Canada

"Toronto, Canada -- Longisil, a form of penicillin used to treat various infections in large and small animals, has been recalled by Canadian health officials.
The drug is administered by injection in animals like cattle, sheep, pigs, horses, cats and dogs, and is available only by prescription from a veterinarian, says Health Canada.Longisil is distributed in Canada by Vetoquinol N.-A. Inc.

Only one lot, Lot #9224, is affected by the recall, with three different vial sizes -- 100 ml, 250 ml and 500 ml -- included. The recall was initiated after Vetoquinol received an "abnormally high number of reports of allergic reactions in animals following use of product from this lot," Health Canada reports. The reports included 14 dogs and maybe one cat that developed swelling and hives within minutes or hours of injection but later made full recoveries.

Adverse effects should be reported to Health Canada at 877-838-7322.

The brutal bowhunting of Elks in Skagit County shocked and outraged the public

People don't realize what cruel monsters bowhunters are and the horrific death these animals endure for sports until they see it for themselves and that is just what they did in Skagit County Washington where Elk were being brutally slaughtered by bowhunters out in the open. This is what Fish and Wildlife allows for sports, trophy and recreational killing whether it be deer or Elks, death by a arrow is never "quick" and one of the most barbaric and inaccurate way to kill an animal. We have non-lethal methods to reduce deer/Elk population why do we need to resort to cruelty to "deal" with deer/Elk population?

Battle flares in Lancaster over puppy-mill case

Now those charges have been dropped, in a spat between the Lancaster County prosecutor and a PSPCA lawyer.

District Attorney Craig Stedman said the PSPCA had dropped the case after meeting Dec. 21 with one of his deputies.

Sue Cosby, executive director of the PSPCA, said Stedman had told her that, after a review, he decided he could not prosecute the cases and recommended that the PSPCA drop them.

Without his support, Cosby said, the organization had no choice, even though she believed the evidence supported the charges.

A PSPCA attorney who is a former state Supreme Court justice and former Chester County district attorney said Stedman had told his client to drop the charges or he would have them dismissed.

"I think it's outrageous," William Lamb said in an interview last week. "What's being ignored is that animals were abused, and people spent thousands to bring these charges. Why would Stedman treat this so cavalierly?"

On Oct. 7, a group of animal-welfare advocates and a veterinarian flew to the auction in southeast Ohio on a jet owned by a friend of a board member of Main Line Animal Rescue, based in Chester Springs. Their goal: Find sick animals among the nearly 400 purebred dogs from Pennsylvania that were to be sold by kennels downsizing or going out of business as a result of the state's more stringent kennel law.

After a veterinarian picked out 12 dogs she believed to be in the poorest health, the animals were purchased and brought back.

The breeders' attorney, Jeffrey Conrad, a former Lancaster County prosecutor, said Thursday that he was pleased charges had been dropped and called the PSPCA's assault on "innocent" kennel operators a form of "malicious prosecution to raise contributions."

But Lamb and a veterinarian said there was ample evidence of abuse to present in court.

Cari Thomson, the vet who went to the auction, said that she had later examined eight dogs and that six had severe periodontal disease and several had serious skin and ear infections.

She said their conditions had constituted "gross neglect."

Pitbulls- We need you to fight for us

Pitbulls are the most hated dogs in the world. As a breed, theyre no more aggressive than any others. They beat out most other breeds in temperament tests performed by the American Temperament Test Society, including the Golden Retriever and Poodle, but bad owners create dogs that are unpredictable. These dogs are not properly socialized to people, children and other animals. They are not properly trained, and theyre owned by irresponsible, ignorant people that refuse to take responsibility for their dogs training. Because of them, Pitbulls have gone from being the all-American breed, prized for their loyalty and intelligence, to the most feared and misunderstood breed ever known. IT IS TIME WE TAKE A STAND FOR THEM.

Melamine Again-Discovery of Melamine-Tainted Milk Shuts Shanghai Dairy

SHANGHAI — Chinese authorities shut down a dairy producer here and arrested three of its executives after tests showed the company was producing milk powder contaminated with melamine, the same industrial chemical that in 2008 was blamed for one of this country’s worst food safety scandals.

Here in Shanghai, city inspectors closed the Shanghai Panda Dairy Company on Thursday for producing milk that had “unacceptably high levels” of melamine, according to the state-run news media.

Shanghai officials said the melamine turned up in routine inspections in condensed milk and high-calcium milk powder that was marketed to middle-aged and elderly consumers.

Calls to Shanghai Panda’s office in Shanghai were not answered. A Chinese Web site lists Shanghai Panda as a subsidiary of Zhejiang Panda, though the relationship could not be confirmed.

Shanghai officials, though, said a sister company in western China, Ningxia Panda, was also being investigated because it was believed to have supplied some of the raw material for the milk powder and condensed milk.

VERY IMPORTANT! Defra consultation on use of wild animals in circuses (UK)

please take action

DEFRA have today launched a three month consultation on the use of wild animals in circuses. See link below.

http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/circus-wild-animals/index.htm

It is vital that we get the maximum number of submissions in favour of a TOTAL BAN.

It is of concern that the government are not consulting on just a ban which shows how much influence the animal circus lobby have in Defra and government circles.

Earlier this year Bolivia banned the use of all animals in circuses with support from the very top of its progressive and compassionate minded government. Other countries have also banned wild animals in circuses or are in process of doing so.
That Britain (a country that is supposed to be ahead of the game on animal welfare) still allows it is truly shameful. Even now with the way this consultation is worded we see that there is a lack of moral and political leadership on this issue. It is also just a few months before a general election and the consultation is being launched just days before Christmas, after the government have dragged their feet for months and months. This can be seen as Defra manipulating the process to ensure the launch is not picked up on widely in the media or by the public and that time could run out to implement any action before the election.

You can submit your submission online at link below. Please go careful with the questions as some are geared towards self or statutory regulation rather than a total ban.

Also, please keep a record of when you put your submission in.

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=E3r7hM6ILmQPuq6ZvblaEmzux7Mrk8Yk2PWm1yiljMw%3d&

PLEASE GIVE THIS MAXIMUM PUBLICITY.

Letters to local and regional press informing people of the consultation are also helpful.

Thanks

Chris

USA- THREE WRITERS TELL THE TRUTH/SALAZAR'S CORRUPT BLM - WILD HORSE ROUND UP'S BRING DEATH AND DESTRUCTION.

*PLEASE FORWARD TO ALL MEDIA* OUTLETS.

PLEASE FORWARD TO PRESIDENT OBAMA.

PLEASE CROSS POST TO ALL CONTACTS.

Plagued by controversy and bad press BLM Director Bob Abby decided to ignore the advice of a Federal Judge and proceed with a wintertime roundup of epic, disastrous proportions. Tens of thousands of American citizens have spoken out and demanded that the Obama administration stop this dangerous operation but to date the new President has elected to remain silent on the topic.

Warned by equine professionals that the chasing of wild horses down snow covered mountains with helicopters would not only prove dangerous and deadly but also destroy the health and well being of the native wild animals; again, the BLM pressed forward but this time on private land so that neither the press or the public could view or monitor the deadly operation.

Many questions have been raised by this clandestine operation that will cost the U.S. tax payers close to $2,000,000.00.

If the horses are being removed because there is, allegedly, little grass on which they can feed, why then did the BLM increase the grazing permits for private cattle by 300% last year, for the exact same public land?

Why is the current Administration, a proposed Administration of “change”, turning a deaf ear to thousands of phone calls, tens of thousands of emails and multiple demonstrations across the country?

Last year the BLM wanted to destroy the 33,000+ wild horses it allegedly has in long term incarceration because it could not afford to feed them; why do they plan on ripping 12,000 more from their rightful land in fiscal 2010? Does that makes sense?

No, of course it does not make sense, nothing about the random acts of violence the BLM commits makes sense.

READ MORE, HERE

HOUSTON , (Horseback) – The federal Bureau of Land Management has released the name of a Nevada landowner who is cooperating with the agency in its roundup of more than 2,000 horses in the remote badlands of that arid state.

Horseback Magazine repeatedly asked for the name of the landowner, Greg Foster, who is cooperating with BLM on the gather. The agency claims the wild horses it is stampeding with a low flying helicopter are in mountainous terrain. Spokesmen say that the bureau is only setting up a holding pen and storing equipment on Foster’s property. Since press and public have been barred from witnessing the “gather” except in tightly controlled “media days,” there is no way to independently determine if the BLM is herding wild horses found on the landowner’s property.

The agency claims the horses are driven from the Nevada highlands into the pen set up on Foster’s property.

The BLM has refused to release any more information about the landowner other than his name. A search has produced numerous Nevadans named Greg Foster. An agency spokeswoman claimed the information is protected by the federal privacy act, however, details regarding federal contractors who are not engaged in national security work are generally readily available as public record. Horseback has asked for the information under the federal Freedom of Information Act. Horseback has also asked if Foster is reimbursing the federal government for removing horses from his property.

READ MORE , HERE

Ken Salazar, Secretary of the Interior proposes to move all of these wild horses out of their natural habitats, send them to the East and sterilize them at a cost of 100 billion dollars to tax payers. As a rancher himself, Salazar seemingly sides with the interests of the cattle ranchers; the more wild horses that are removed, the more cattle that can be brought into the ranges to graze. Advocates for the wild horses want the horses to remain on the land that was originally bequeathed to them and claim the horses are thriving and do no damage.

Obama has not commented on the gather, although celebrities Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, Viggo Mortensen and Playboy models Shane and Sia Barbi have signed an open letter asking President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid ( D-Nev) to intervene on behalf of the wild horses. A spokesperson for Reid has expressed his disappointment with the BLM's management of the wild horse situation.

The Cloud Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit organization named in honor of Cloud, a wild stallion that the PBS has followed since his birth. Cloud is now an example of the independence and beauty of the wild horses.

USA-Bring home the military dogs from Pakistan..Six K9 labs need our help

If resources to have the dogs relocated to the United States are not found soon, they will be euthanized. The United States government cannot fund the transportation of the dogs since they are part of a Pakistan working dog program. Enthusiastic volunteers from the US Embassy in Pakistan are giving their time to coordinate care and documentation to the United States. K9 Soldiers has agreed to meet the dogs in either Canada or the port of US entry have them vetted and care for them while the best forever homes are found.

The cost for transport of dogs from Karachi to New York City is approximately $2,000 each with carrier.. There are currently six Labradors in the program. The dogs average around 3 years of age.

We are now in need of prayers...we have the means to bring these dogs home BUT the Pakistani Gov't needs to release them. Be patient as we have good people on the ground there who are working diligently on our behalf.
