Please help us save more animals and vote for Hope for Paws. (by Eldad Hagar)

Marley - rescued from the Hollywood Hills by Eldad Hagar

Marley dug a hole in the ground near a house in the Hollywood Hills, hidden away from the hungry Coyotes. I was called to get him, and I was warned that he might bite. I used the snare just to be safe, and as you'll see, there was no need in that snare.

Please watch Eldad's latest video-from Hope for Paws Animal Rescue Org.-Desert dogs & cats (hoarding situation)

We responded to an emergency in the desert. Major help is needed to this case. Please watch, and let me know if you can think of ways to help this woman and her animal

it seemed unique in relation to typical hoarding-probably more common
than we know among sick and elderly. There are no social services to help. Just a couple hours outside LA, it is as if you are in the middle of nowhere.

Thank you

US- BLINDS DOGS.NET

Welcome to BlindDogs.net!

Lucy is a Jack Russell Terrier that suddenly went totally blind from something called SARDS (Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome) in September 2004, at just 2 1/2 years old.

This web site was created after learning how often blind dogs are put to sleep, that are otherwise perfectly healthy. We hope to make people aware of what happy and fulfilled lives a blind dog can still have!

Offering support and information, we hope to help other dog owners that are adjusting to life with a newly blind dog, or a dog that may slowly be losing their sight and let you know you're not alone

AUSTRALIA-Minnie at The Lost Dogs' Home

This is a story about a dog that came into our care at The Lost Dogs' Home in North Melbourne. It's the sort of thing we (and the RSCPA) see all the time. It may be shocking to some, but it has a very inspirational and happy ending.

Please forward this is to as many people as you can!

The Helga Heidrich foundation is in a great immediate danger, and especially now since the torrential rains have dramatically damaged the shelter.

Helga’s work is a gigantic task in a country where animals do not count; she is the headlight of the animal protection in Morocco, and if it would come to disappear it would be an immense tragedy for the animals in this country.

Helga’s foundation is in Marrakech, and it actually contains:

-Equines:38
-Cats: 20
-Dogs: 58

The purpose of this appeal is twofold:

-1 : Most urgently is to feed the animals , and to rebuild the shelter, but in a first time what’s missing most is food.

-2: The Foundation cannot exist any longer without the help of the European countries, ( even the European shelters need help from other European countries to exist) it needs very urgently the help of private donators with regular contributions.

If you are in a position to convince an important organization to participate in the operation to save the foundation… your help will be highly appreciated. .

Helga has calculated that if 1000 members donate each €60 per year, the shelter would be allowed to continue its existence.

However it isn’t easy to find 1000 members, even if €60 per year is not so much..

But if other countries would be willing to help a little, and perhaps with the support of one or more associations .. it should be possible..

US-Cindy is an ADORABLE little pittie mix who is looking for a belly rub and someone to love

Cindy is an ADORABLE little pittie mix who is looking for a belly rub and someone to love. She is said to be about 12yrs old, but she clearly has lots of gentle, playful energy to share. She walks great on a leash, LOVES PEOPLE AND AFFECTION, completely ignored the other dogs in the shelter kennels, and is irresistibly loving and sweet. She is an owner surrender (argh!!) and could be PTS ANY DAY NOW!!! Pls watch her amazingly sweet video, share her, foster her, rescue her, adopt her--ANYTHING but leave her to die at the shelter. PLEASE!!

ADOPT A DOG FROM PASADENA HUMANE

This happy friendly girl is so much fun! She loves to play, and run around the training room. She was abandoned by her prior owner who moved without taking her along. She loves to be pet, takes treats gently, knows her sit command, and weighs 64 pounds.

This adorable little guy was found hit by a car on the side of the road, but thanks to some TLC from our vet staff, he's as good as new! He is SO friendly and sweet with all the dogs and people he meets! He weighs 8.8 pounds, takes treats gently, and knows his sit command.

Fantaisia was dumped on the mean streets of gang land without a name tag or ID nor did anyone come forward to claim her after searching for her owners. Fantaisia's name suits her beautifully, since the nice person who grabbed her off the street had called her "Aisia", but her dancing skills and "fantasy" colored eyes, made for a great combination of the two, and she is sweet and sexy like the superstar you see from American Idol. Perhaps Fantaisia, the human, will see her video and respond by wanting to adopt her for a forever loving companion to travel with on tour, or just hang out and cuddle with in front of the t.v.? Thank you for wanting to adopt Fantaisia. SweetHD@aol.com

This sweet petite girl weighs just 35 pounds! She is a shelter staff favorite - they say she's just fantastic! She is playful and sweet with dogs, walks well on a leash, and enjoys being pet.

Poor Pancho's owner passed away and he is still quite sad. He is super super sweet, gentle, quiet, housebroken, good in the car, on leash, and all-around well behaved inside a home, and with all the people and dogs he meets.

Wow lots of fun and energy in a little package! This girl gets along well with her little dog kennel mate, takes treats gently, and was shy when she first came to the shelter but now is lots of bouncy fun!

Sweet mellow Chacha would love a warm loving home!

This beautiful 56-pound boy was found by a good samaratian who kept him for 7 weeks while trying to find his owner, and then a new home. He was kept in the yard with his female dog during the day, and slept inside in a crate at night. He is very loveable, leans into you for petting, knows how to walk on a leash, and when introduced to a dominant dog will flop on his back to show his belly!

This beautiful buff colored girl was found very underweight, but is eating well at the s helter and now weighs 47 pounds. She should fill out to be 55 to 60 pounds ideally. She is very active and fun! She loves to run around the training room and comes when called. She would likely excell (and enjoy!) a training class as she is very treat motivated. She is looking for a dog-experienced adult-only home because of her energy and still needing to learn not to jump up.

This big guy has what we call "happy tail" - he is so happy when people stop to say hi, he wags his tail so hard it hits the side of his kennel! He enjoys being petted, playing with toys, and gets along with dogs that don't mind his high energy level.

A Letter from a Shelter Manager:

I think our society needs a huge "Wake-up" call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all...a view from the inside if you will.

First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the "back" of an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don't even know.

That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when it's not a cute little puppy anymore. So how would you feel if you knew that there's about a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it is going to be dumped at? Purebred or not! About 50% of all of the dogs that are "owner surrenders" or "strays", that come into my shelter are purebred dogs.

The most common excuses I hear are; "We are moving and we can't take our dog (or cat)." Really? Where are you moving too that doesn't allow pets? Or they say "The dog got bigger than we thought it would". How big did you think a German Shepherd would get? "We don't have time for her". Really? I work a 10-12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs! "She's tearing up our yard". How about making her a part of your family? They always tell me "We just don't want to have to stress about finding a place for her we know she'll get adopted, she's a good dog".

Odds are your pet won't get adopted & how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn't full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies. Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it. If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don't, your pet won't get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose. If your dog is big, black or any of the "Bully" breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door.

Those dogs just don't get adopted. It doesn't matter how 'sweet' or 'well behaved' they are.
If your dog doesn't get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed. If the shelter isn't full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long . Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment. If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because shelters just don't have the funds to pay for even a $100 treatment.

Here's a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put-down".

First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk happy, wagging their tails. Until they get to "The Room", every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it's strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs depending on the size and how freaked out they are. Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the "pink stuff". Hopefully your pet doesn't panic from being restrained and jerk. I've seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams. They all don't just "go to sleep", sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves.

When it all ends, your pets corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed waiting to be picked up like garbage. What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? You'll never know and it probably won't even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right?

I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and can't get the pictures out of your head I deal with everyday on the way home from work.

I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much farther than the pets you dump at a shelter.

Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes.

My point to all of this DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE!

Hate me if you want to. The truth hurts and reality is what it is. I just hope I maybe changed one persons mind about breeding their dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog. I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say "I saw this and it made me want to adopt". THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORTH IT

For those of you that care--- please repost this to at least one other craiglist in another city/state. Let's see if we can get this all around and have an impact

Si podeis acoger a NIGHT escribidme a annasvetlenka@gmail.com

Dog Advocate Receives Second Conviction for Helping America's Forgotten Dogs: Will Appeal Trespassing Charges

February 19, 2010, Altoona, PA Dog advocate Tamira Ci Thayne, founder and CEO of Dogs Deserve Better, a non-profit working solely on behalf of chained and penned dogs, has received a second conviction for helping America's forgotten dogs: those left chained or penned and suffering in Pennsylvania's frigid winter temps.

Thayne's first arrest came for helping a dog who'd been chained for 13 years, and needed medical help in order to go on. The cowards who chained him left him lying on the ground, unable to stand, for three days while they waited for him to die and save them the $100 vet fee. Thayne took him to the vet and refused to return him to those who abandoned him in his time of need.

On Tuesday, February 16, 2010, Thayne was again convicted of a crime for helping chained dogs. This time she added trespassing to the list, for daring to stuff two doghouses with straw and giving underweight chained dogs bones, food, and water to help them survive on a day with wind chills at -11 degrees.

Says Thayne: "I am committed to unchaining Pennsylvania's dogs, America's dogs. I will not quit until I see Americans treat our companions with the respect and care they deserve. I have come to accept I may end up with a rap sheet longer than my arm for helping chained dogs. It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make in fact, I consider it an honor. They deserve that kind of dedication. It's time America grows up. Time America follows European countries such as England, Austria, and Germany, who know how to make dogs part of the family and would never allow their neighbors to chain their dogs in today's society. I remain optimistic because I know that time is short on the side of the abusers. We are simply not willing to tolerate the abuse any longer. Chaining your dog for life IS abuse. Be intolerant with me."

Thayne will appeal. She is asking all Pennsylvania residents to stand against this form of abuse by joining the coalition to Unchain Pennsylvania Dogs. The coalition seeks to pass HB1254, a bill setting time limits on chaining, and creating better conditions for Pennsylvania's dogs. Sign up today at Unchainpadogs.com.

Please visit the website at DogsDeserveBetter.org to learn more about dog chaining, the reasons it is cruel to dogs and dangerous to humans, and to find a local area representative.

Save Iditarod dogs from horrific cruelty

Please save Iditarod dogs from horrific abuse by sending protest emails to race supporters. A sample letter and email addresses individually and in blocks are on http://www.helpsleddogs.org/sponsors.htm .
Six dogs died in the 2009 race, including two dogs on a doctor's team who froze to death in the brutally cold winds. What happens to the dogs during the Iditarod includes death, paralysis, frostbite (where it hurts the most!), bleeding ulcers, bloody diarrhea, lung damage, pneumonia, ruptured discs, viral diseases, broken bones, torn muscles and tendons and sprains.

During training runs, Iditarod dogs have been killed by moose, snowmachines, and various motor vehicles, including a semi tractor and an ATV. They have died from drowning, heart attacks and being strangled in harnesses. Dogs have also been injured while training. They have been gashed, quilled by porcupines, bitten in dog fights, and had broken bones, and torn muscles and tendons. Most dog deaths and injuries during training aren't even reported.

Dog beatings and whippings are common. During the 2007 Iditarod, eyewitnesses reported that musher Ramy Brooks kicked, punched and beat his dogs with a ski pole and a chain. Jim Welch says in his book Speed Mushing Manual, "A training device such as a whip is not cruel at all but is effective." He also said, "It is a common training device in use among dog mushers..."

Born to Die ......

Every year, an estimated 5 to 10 million pets are euthanized in animal shelters in the United States. Why? Because there is no place for them to go, no homes for them. Yet, we continue to let animals roam freely, unneutered and producing more unwanted animals. Their offspring often go from birth to the shelter where, if they are not adopted before their 6 days are up, they will be killed. That is where the expression "born to die" applies; newly born into this world only to be put to death. What a tragic waste of life. There is a solution for this overpopulation problem, and that is to spay and neuter.

Two years after Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Stedman failed to prosecute the puppy mill operators featured on Oprah

... DA Stedman refuses to prosecute PA dog breeders who sent sick and injured dogs to auction in Ohio.

On October 7, of 2009, volunteers from Main Line Animal Rescue, along with agents from the PSPCA and a veterinarian, traveled to Holmes County, Ohio and purchased twelve dogs at the Farmerstown Sale Barn in Baltic - one of Ohio's more notorious Amish dog auctions. Three hundred and eighty-four breeding dogs from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, were sent to Ohio and placed on the block. MLAR and the PSPCA picked out twelve dogs showing clear signs of abuse, purchased them, then transported them back to the Pennsylvania where they were examined, photographed, and treated by numerous veterinarians and specialists. Six commercial dog breeders from Lancaster County were later charged with animal cruelty. Justice looked as though it would prevail until Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Stedman, in a move that stunned animal welfare organizations and dog lovers throughout the Commonwealth, unexpectedly had all the charges dismissed.

ADOPTION DOGS FROM PASADENA HUMANE , CA

This spunky 9 pound puppy is ready for some fun! He is kenneled with two other little dogs, and he definitely likes to be the boss. He enjoys attention, being pet, and is good about being picked up.

WOW what a fantastic dog!! He is so gentle, friendly, and well-behaved. He greets you with a happy wagging tail and knows not to jump up. He also knows his sit command, and if you engage him in play, he'll playbow to play with you, so cute! He is a volunteer favorite as he is calm, very easy to walk on leash and enjoys strolling around the park.

This 75-pound guy is very calm, sweet and very shy.

Cute and sweet! This little dog is kenneled with other little dogs and doing well.

This great little dog went out with our mobile and was a star with all the people, and dogs big and small. He walks well on leash, likes being pet, hops into your lap, takes treats gently, and will lift his front paw and then playbow to ask for more. Cute!

This cute 13-pound guy went out with our mobile on 2/13 and was a friendly with all the people he met, winning them over immediately with his charm! He takes treats gently, enjoys being pet, and sitting calmly at your side.

Doris Banham Dog Rescue - There is a place and home for every stray dog - somewhere ......

Every year at Doris Banham Dog Rescue we save many dogs from being euthanased in council run kennels by pulling them and finding them the loving homes they deserve.

To provide lifelong quality care for rescued senior dogs

SPAIN- LIVE ARICO PROTETORA DE ANIMALES

I recently visited the centre and I honestly have to say that the kennels and the dogs generally are in a bit of a sad state. Live Arico say that they are doing the best that they can with very limited recourses, but some people have expressed the opinion that it would be better for the dogs if the centre were to be shut down.

The purpose of this post is not to take sides, but to pose some questions for all those involved to think about carefully ...

1. Is it better for dogs to live in overcrowded (and potentially worse) conditions in rescue kennels, or are they better off on the street fending for themselves ?

2. if Live Arico were to be closed down, then where would the dogs go ? Presumably a lot of them would have too be put down, so is this a viable option ? nb of course some dogs from Live Arico do indeed find homes eventually.

3. Then there's the difficult and controversial issue of Euthanasia. Is it better to keep alive say an elderly dog with a terminal illness ? or a dog which is aggressive / potentially vicious and is very unlikely to find a home ? ... keeping it alive might well be detrimental to the other dogs in the kennels. Is it more cruel to keep a dog alive when it can have no real quality of life, than it is to 'put it to sleep' ?

So those are just a few of the difficult questions involved in this complex issue. Tenerife Dogs website aims to try and take a balanced point of view and puts the interests of the dogs above anything else. We would urge everyone to look for solutions that are in the dogs best interests, not to look for the negative but to facilitate positivity.

For instance, we would suggest that if anybody is thinking of getting a dog, adopting from Live Arico means one less dog living in difficult, overcrowded conditions.

Tenerife Dogs hopes to able to continue to support Live Arico by publicising fund-raising events and encouraging donations of time & money, so that conditions can be improved for the doggies, but we feel that it's our duty to raise issues which might not be very dog-friendly - as we have done in past stories here

Tilt, pup shot by BB guns + now can't hold head straight, seeks loving home.

Tilt is a lovable, playful and by her personality, you wouldn't know she's a gun shot survivor.
Her litter mates weren't as lucky though, as a passerby found most of them deceased except for Tilt.
And while watching her walk, you can see how she received her name.
Animal Shelter Director Debbie Blackwood says "We we're concerned. We suspected she had been attacked by something, so we took her to the vet and yes, she had been shot. She has bb's lodged in and around her head, brain and neck."
Blackwood considers Tilt's situation to be an example of animal abuse.
"To shoot and mane an animal and not end its life in a quick manner is not considered a humane death."
More than 60 percent of the animals that come through the shelter have health issues.
When it comes to paying for the animals that need extra medical attention, such as in tilt's case, it's based on donations.
If you're interested in adding Tilt to your family, you'll notice she enjoys the attention and toys like other dogs do.
But Blackwood says she may not regain the normal function of how she carries her head.
"I would love if someone adopted her because the animal shelter is a holding facility. They need the love and the quiet of a normal home.”

SAVE A MEXICAN MUTT- DOG RESCUE FROM MEXICO- SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE

HERE IS A LINK WITH MORE RESCUE FROM MEXICO

http://www.language-works.com/MexicoDogs/orgs.htm

While animal activists in the U.S. argue over how best to deal with America's pet overpopulation problem, their counterparts in Mexico are fighting far more rampant pet overpopulation. What's worse is that homeless dogs are often electrocuted, rather than euthanized by injection as is the norm in American shelters.

A rescue group called Save a Mexican Mutt (SAMM) offers a hands-on way to help the street dogs of Mexico: adopting them. You can follow the progress of SAMM's rescued dogs on the group's blog.

Dogs are Snowmeggedon's Forgotten Victims;Sentenced to life outside, chained or penned dogs suffer in blizzard-like conditions

February 10, 2010, Altoona, PA —Snowmegeddon, a nickname given to the recent blast of snow storms hitting the east coast, has it's share of human victims, but the weather's forgotten victims suffer silent and often deadly fates: America's chained and penned dogs. Unable to escape their tether or pen to find appropriate shelter as they would do in the wild, they await the mercy of humans, humans for whom mercy is not high on the list of priorities.

Overwhelmed with anywhere from 20-35 inches of snow, the region's residents dig out their cars, their homes, and their driveways, but repeatedly leave their chained dogs to fend for themselves. Doghouses become buried in the snow, not even visible as the lawn ornaments they once were.

"Anyone who leaves his/her dog chained or penned out in the severe winter weather with two feet of snow, below zero wind chills, and temperatures in the single digits should be convicted without question of animal cruelty," says Tamira Ci Thayne, founder and CEO of Dogs Deserve Better, a nonprofit working to bring dogs into the home and family.

The nonprofit gets hundreds of heartbreaking e-mails during periods of inclement weather. Emails such as this one from Virginia: "Last month they didn't dig the dog out from his house for three days, no food either. When I returned to the property today there were no tracks in the yard. The dog had wrapped himself around another stilt causing him to have no room to move, get to food, nothing. Another neighbor came and dug out the doghouse."

Or this report, from West Virginia: "Rotties are tied up behind a house with no food or water for four days now. I sent animal control and when they knocked on the door, a 75-year-old lady in a walker answered and said she can't get out back to take care of them. Apparently her family stops by once in a while to give them some food or water. But with the snow they haven't been there in some time."

This scenario repeats itself in towns all across our nation, as dogs await better laws which will protect them from both the cruelties of man and freezing temperatures. As winter storms ravage the country, bringing below-zero wind chills and arctic temperatures in many areas, dogs hold on as best they can. Those that freeze to death are rarely reported, quickly disposed of by owners looking to avoid legal consequences for their failure to properly care for their pets.

Dogs Deserve Better, a national nonprofit organization which works solely on behalf of chained and penned dogs, warms that chaining of dogs on a continual basis is cruel for many reasons, not the least of which is the danger of death in sub-zero temperatures. Because dogs are pack animals, they can become neurotic or aggressive due to lack of socialization with humans, and in 2009 alone at least 55 children in the U.S. were killed or seriously injured enough to make headlines after attacks by chained or penned dogs.

The real tragedy is that the cruelty and danger caused by tethering dogs is completely avoidable through legislation. Laws limiting or banning chaining result in safer towns for our children and more compassionate living for Man's Best Friend.

So far four states have passed limitations on chaining: California, Texas, Connecticut, and Nevada. Hundreds of cities and counties have passed limitations or flat-out bans.

Please visit the website at DogsDeserveBetter.org to learn more about dog chaining, the reasons it is cruel to dogs and dangerous to humans, and to find a local area representative.

What a difference a day makes (music by Moby)

"What a difference a day makes" is the title and main theme of a beautifully produced motion graphics film launched by national campaign group, Animal Aid.

If everyone in the UK committed to just one meat-free day a week, this would result in greater carbon savings than taking five million cars off the road. Reducing the amount of animal products in our diets will also help to boost our health and, of course, help to end animal suffering. What more incentive do you need? So start with Meat-Free Monday and then try Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And dont forget to tell your friends and family!

What a difference a day makes was created by award-winning, London-based design and motion company, Taylor McKenzie (http://www.tmck.co.uk) and features Mobys iconic track, "In my heart", as the soundtrack to the film.

Need Placement Help!
Date: Mon, 8 Feb 2010 08:52:22 -0500

After two years of no volunteers, no funding, dumb ass government officials both local and state and just sheer exhaustion of the massive number of strays and drop offs, I am admitting defeat, and closing the only no kill shelter in the area.

It is with the deepest regrets that I can not make this work for the animals, and heaviness of heart that I send this email asking (begging) for help placing my dogs. I am overcrowded, overworked and working with a handicap of a cast right now. I am the only feeding, watering cleaning person who takes care of 113 dogs and 22 cats, and I can not keep doing this. What used to take 6 hours per day to complete now takes me 8 hours, because of the broken ankle.
I have a water leak that I can not afford to have fixed, so I am carrying 36 water jugs to the shelter every day to water the dogs and cats, and also having to carry coal and wood to heat the building.

I have worked with all the disadvantages that have been thrown at me for over 2 years now, but I am now financially, emotionally, physically and mentally drained and I cannot just leave these dogs to starve in the building but right now I can not afford to feed them and care for them. I am in debt big time where I have borrowed money for food and vet bills, and I have to acknowledge my limitations.
My personal bills are all overdue and I am raising 3 granddaughters that have suffered the consequencs of pouring every available minute and dollar into this rescue that seems to always demand more than I have.

If I turn them over to the local pounds they will be euthanized and in Logan county they still use the gas chamber. I can not bear to think of them being put down and I will do what I can to keep them from going to the pounds for as long as I can but it would be more humane to put them down than to let them starve.

I have contacted many of the organizations that are supposed to be serious about helping animals, AHS, HSUS, PETA etc. who has many suggestions about raising money, and gives advice on spay and neuter, but if you work rescue you understand that does not feed or help the immediate need.

If you have any contacts that can help me move these dogs to safety where they do not have to be euthanized please contact me I know I can only hold out a few more days and desperately need to get these guys somewhere safe.

Please contact any rescues or avenues of placement you may have and help me get these dogs moved.

Saving Billy

He had only been in the world one day, but it was to be his last. Billy, one of many male calves considered worthless by the dairy industry, was about to receive a fatal hammer blow to the head when a man named Larry intervened. USA- Hoarder Dogs - Their Story Can Finally Be Told - PLEASE CROSS POST!

Approximately two weeks ago a member of Help Save One went to pick up 3 dogs from a lady who pulled them from a shelter in North Carolina and needed a rescue to take them in. We were asked to take in the 2 puppies and one dog and a volunteer for our rescue drove 5 hours to get them. When she walked onto the property she could not believe what she was seeing. Emaciated dogs living outside in rusty metal barrels, one dog with no fur, trash everywhere, and one dog curled up in the shell of an air conditioner. One dog caught her eye and her heart broke. A purebred Boxer who was as thin as a rail. She is the first one photographed below. This is the photo of the dog AFTER being at the vet for over a week and with medical care.

There was approximately 15 dogs on the property. Us and the other rescue involved (who we at this time do not want to name due to the ongoing investigation) knew something had to be done. Help Save One agreed to take the dogs in if the other rescue could get this lady to slowly surrender the dogs. With hoarders they really feel they are helping and it is hard to get them to give anyone up.

All in all we were able to rescue 8 dogs off the property and the Department of Agriculture is investigating. Until this point we could not say anything because the dogs were at a vet clinic in close proximity to where she lived. We were afraid that, even though she surrendered them, she would go back if she heard of anything being made public and try to take them.

All eight are now out of the state and safe. We incurred close to $3000 in vet bills that we could not fund raise for due to the situation. This is during one of the most crucial times for us because we are in the middle of vetting all the Gaston/Lincolnton dogs from the pull on January 22. We found a way to make it happen but now we are asking for your help.

Please consider donating towards their care. The $3000 covered all their vaccinations, altering, infections, staging for heartworm treatment, coccidia, deworming, grooming, transport, and medications. Some of these dogs have abnormal blood panels including anemia, low protein levels, and abnormal liver enzyme levels. Three are heartworm positive and have started a regiment of Doxy/Heartguard.

These dogs did not ask to be left outside with no shelter and inadequate food. I can't imagine what a dog does that lives outside when its cold and there is no place comfortable to rest their head. This little Boxer above went into her cold metal barrel and curled her thin body up. Its so unacceptable to treat dogs this way. They have feelings and do not deserve to be riddled with parasites, infections, starved, and left to breed litter after litter.

Can you help by being a foster home to one of these dogs? We also could really use help with the vet bills we paid. Anything you can do to help is appreciated.

The other dogs on the property (except one) are photographed below along with their vet bills. We renamed all the dogs to give them a new start on life.

Their journey of starvation, living outside, and lack of vet care ended two weeks ago. Their remaining days will be all about knowing what security and love feel like.

TAMMY GRIMES , A BRAVE KIND WOMAN

Tammy Grimes, founder of Dogs Deserve Better, was arrested September 11, 2006 for helping a dying chained dog named Doogie who could not stand in East Freedom, Pennsylvania. Below are the details of the case, and video documentation.

Tammy’s statement: “I made a hard decision; I could not have lived with myself or looked myself in the eye if I were such a coward as to leave Doogie lying there dying on the ground for fear of what would happen to me. I see this case as a travesty against justice…the true perpetrators of a crime are the people who left Doogie to lie there dying for three days without doing right by him. I am very saddened that we live in a society where people have to be afraid to do the right thing, to help those in need, whether that need be human or animal. Arrests such as mine are a pitiful statement for America, and I ask all dog lovers to stand with me to insist that all charges against me are dropped and charges of animal cruelty are instead placed against the Arnolds of East Freedom, PA. The Arnolds who left Doogie to die. This video truly speaks for itself, and for Doogie. I did what was morally right; I stand by my decision to help him and will be proud of it until my dying day. No one can take that from me.”

Shortly after we got Doogie to my home, situated, bathed—had to, the stench was too bad—and fed and watered an Officer Flaig called from the Freedom Township Police Department (Freedom, isn’t that ironic?). He wanted me to return Doogie, which I refused to do. I explained that I had video and photos documenting the animal cruelty, and the neighbor was willing to testify; why didn’t he pursue that as they were the perpetrators of the crime, and should be charged? He refused, and was not interested in seeing my evidence.

He and three other police vehicles arrived at my home at approximately 9:30 p.m. As I refused to hand Doogie over to be returned to death on a chain, and would not tell them where he was, I was taken into custody, transported to the East Freedom police office, and charged with theft, receiving stolen property, criminal mischief, and criminal trespass. I was released on $50,000 unsecured bond and ordered to appear at a preliminary hearing September 21, 2006.

I was treated like a common criminal, especially by Chief Reilly, who called me a ‘freakin’ idiot’, ‘incompetent’, and I overheard him telling Officer Flaig that if I ever came near his dog I would have a slug in my a**. Again, there was no interest in any evidence that the dog had been abused or criminally neglected. As far as they were concerned, the dog’s safety or condition was not even an issue.
I was released after seeing Judge Aigner, where Chief Reilly asked that I be not given bail but incarcerated for my failure to cooperate. It was 2:00 a.m., and I had no ride home, over 30 miles away. I had to walk to a local all-night store to call and get a cab, because there was no concern over how I would get home. Their attempt to dehumanize me didn’t work. I held my head high and still do. I looked Chief Reilly square in the eye at every opportunity. I will not be broken.

USA-Video shows the sad last hours of a wild foal called "Hope"

We had heard report about the eight-month-old "Calico foal" who was run so hard that his hooves sloughed off, and now videographer Laura Leigh, on assignment for Horseback Magazine, has published stark footage of this colt as he lay dying.

Writing earlier this month in Horseback Magazine, Ms. Leigh had movingly described the agonizing last days of this beaten baby, whom she named, "Hope Springs Eternal":

"The pens held mostly foals and a few mares. Each horse I saw demonstrated some form of lameness. Many had bandages on their legs. Of particular concern was a foal that would not rise when approached.. His eyes were glassy.

The baby I saw on January 22 was in incredible pain to the point that, as a wild animal, he could hardly lift his head as a strange human, a potential predator, approached. All the others rose and limped away. This baby languished in that facility with no windbreak, in agony. A baby that had a chance if the humans involved could have attempted to create an opportunity to work together. Releasing that foal would have cost the BLM nothing. . .and maybe created the sensation that somewhere in this madness a spirit of humanity could overcome this battle of obstinate adherence to outdated bureaucratic protocol. I had 'Hope.'"

The magazine has now obtained a report from veterinarian Richard Sanford, DVM, on site at the Indian Road holding facility in Fallon, Nevada, who admits that "the gather most likely caused the hoof trauma in this case." This brave young colt was "euthanized" because, as is shown in Ms. Leigh's video, he became too weak to stand, and "hoof wall separation occurred on the front foot and one hind foot." He was the second foal at Calico to have met this cruel fate.

Anthony Damiano joins Anthony Marr in the 39-states-in-7-months Compassion for Animals Road Expedition #7 (CARE- 7)

From Anthony Damiano:

My friends,

After much deliberation, I have decided that I can no longer go to my job each day and bear the thought of my time being wasted on petty issues.
A leading reason for my feeling this way is that I am wasting YOUR precious time, by working only part-time with your full-time support. I am also wasting our Planet Earth's time, of which she has little left, if any.

So, I am now announcing that I will be resigning from my job, flying to Washington state on April 1 to join my friend/my president, Anthony Marr on his 7th Compassion for Animals Road Expedition (CARE-7 - for tour map and itinerary please see www.myspace.com/AnthonyMarr), so he will not have to brave it alone.

Anthony has been receiving a good number of death threats and this cannot be
ignored. I refuse to allow my close friend and my brother take this trip by himself. I know many of you would like to do the same if you could. Being the Vice President of the G.A.H.C. places me next in line for hunters' threats. This is something new to me on this level, but nothing new to Anthony Marr. Back in his anti-hunting campaign in the 1990s, he regularly debated 30-120 hunters at a time (read his MS blog), totaling some 50 times, was chased on the highway by hunter trucks, and in fact was physically assaulted resulting in fractured facial bones. Subsequently, Paul George wrote: "Anthony could not be intimidated. His blunt, unflappable style infuriated the opposition."
Now, in 2010, he is more determined than ever. Be assured that with 2010 technology, we will record every word uttered by the hunters, written and spoken, every suspicious vehicle that crosses our path, every confrontation we encounter and every assault we suffer if any.
All negative issues that arise will be broadcast throughout the internet and sent to our vast network of colleagues and friends. I myself will keep a field journal for all of you to read on my myspace blog(www.myspace.com/starwarsfan1974) as part of my duties being Vice President as of April 1st. I will be updating this blog to keep all of you up to date all along this tour.

So in light of my having "burnt my bridge", I will no longer have a salary as I will be putting in my two weeks notice placing my last day at work to be around my 36th birthday in late March. I will embark on the CARE-7 with Anthony on a wing and a prayer, and your support. Now I have to do as Anthony does, raise some funds to pay my bills while I devote my full time as a volunteer to the animals, our childrens' future, and Mother Earth. I hope you will stand with Anthony Marr and
me, and travel with us in spirit until the CARE-7 tour is done.

I love you all,

Anthony Damiano
