A Tribute to Animal Shelters

Every year, between 5 and 7 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, and an estimated 3-4 million (population of Los Angeles, the nation's 2nd largest city) are euthanized. YOU can help this crisis to be resolved! By adopting from a shelter, you save 2 lives: the life of the animal you adopt, and the life of the one that will soon take its place at the shelter. PLEASE ADOPT!

A Letter to a Rescuer - its from a fellow Activist but i'm hereby sending it to all my Friends and Rescuers espec.

From Facebook

In the USA and much of the west, because of the influence of the judeo.christian religious tradition, those have a sense of compassion and do in fact even rescue certain animals, somehow feel it is their devine right to harm and kill 'food' animals. The following is an actual correspondance with a rescuer who justifies violently taking the lives of other animals as follows:

"IN Christianity God gave us dominion over the animals....and I believe that most are here to give man meat, eggs, milk, etc.....but he didn't say man could be cruel to them. Just the opposite. Its the cruelty that is wrong...not slaughtering them for food...which should be painless." The name of the correspondant has been with held to insure privacy.

What is so tragic about ...'s failure to grasp the reality of the situation is that s/he is obviously a person who has some innate compassion, yet it has been suppressed by what s/he learned from a semitic religion:

'As a Roman Catholic I spend tons of my own money trapping cats, getting them fixed and feeding the homeless ones every day. This has nothing to do with religion whatsoever...'

The rescuer's innate respect for animals has been virtually nullified by religious teachings and restricted to what is culturally acceptable. The message of the mainstream USA/western religions destroys compassion in caring souls. If it is not countered, there will be no progress for animals in the west.

The following was sent in response to the claim of the 'rescuer' that certain animals exist as 'food' for humans and that it is compassionate to slaughter them:

'Notice ...'s complete, schizophrenic, disconnect between saving animals and defending the right to slaughter them at the same time. She is typical of those who so compartmentalize their cruelty to make it acceptable to themselves, that they sacrifice reality to do it. It appears extremely evident that we are breeding an entire race of psychopaths. There are those born that way, but far more prevalent are those society creates with its insane moral and ethical contradictions.'

The same moral confusion is not expressed by those who follow religions based on ahimsa: unconditional compassion for humans and animals.

...,

The deaths of the billions upon billions of animals slaughtered for consumption is completely un-necessary, as both vegetarian and vegan diets have been scientifically shown to be healthier than meat based diets.

The millions of healthy young dogs killed in shelters in the USA is absolutely unnecessary and in fact it is against the law in India to kill a dog for any reason other than extreme illness or injury.

Compassionate slaughter is an oxymoron - a contradiction in terms. The larger animals who are slaughtered are butchered with knives. Surely you do not argue that this is a pleasant experience. They do not die instantly and suffer and are in pain and a state of terror as they are repeatedly stabbed. Furthermore even if compassionate slaughter were possible, we do not have the right to take the life of a living being whose life is as precious to that being as our lives are to us. Such violence indicates a profound lack of respect for the sanctity of life.

There have been numerous reality checks of so called 'free range' chicken and eggs...It usually means that thousands of chickens are crammed into a large open space (no cages - hence the label free range) in a warehouse type building with a window up above to let in light. These chickens do not have happy lives and even if they did we do not have the right to take their lives - They too want to live. See the following:

I talked with a rabbi who witnessed the slaughter as part of his duties. He noted that the screams of the animals was terrible. When he told me that despite what he had observed he ate meat, I realized I could no longer be a part of a religion that so devalued compassion.

On some level you understand that the life of an animal is valuable, as you work to rescue dogs and cats? In China they have the same callous attitude towards our beloved companion animals that you have for so called 'food' animals. How can you possibly justify the harm done to these creatures. Their lives are just a precious as those of our companion animals?

'I have from an early age abjured the use of meat , and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men.' Leonardo Da Vinci

In short, we would not allow for the slaughter of humans as food and homeless individuals are not euthanized. I ask you to consider why animals should not be afforded the same respect.

Best Wishes,
Ruth

R.I.P Snorkel the Tiger ...

As a cub, Snorkel spent his early years forced to pose as a prop with people for their photos. Then he ended up caged for years at a family circus.Luckily, he found a true safe haven at Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, FL. Watch as he finally enjoys a taste of the wild and, for the first time in his life, was able to run...still much less than he truly deserves.

*Snorkel passed away on 3-12-10 but the twinkle in his eye still lives on in our hearts

Help WWF, The International Tiger Coalition and Big Cat Rescue tighten regulations to protect captive tigers in the U.S and prevent the increased demand for tiger products that put wild populations at risk.

Sign WWF's petition to Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack asking them to use their authority to close existing loopholes in the permitting and monitoring of captive tigers in the U.S.

SIGN THE PETITION HERE: http://bit.ly/aC1IFN

At present, there is currently no way to determine how many captive tigers are in the U.S., where they are, who owns them, or what happens to them when they die. This makes them an easy target for black market sales, stimulating demand for tiger products and threatening wild populations by putting them at increased risk of poaching. Please sign the petition, our goal is to double the number of wild tigers by 2022, the next Year of the Tiger.
