Extreme Animal Neglect Uncovered at Boone County Shelter

"This is the worst, the worst dog situation that I have been on in West Virginia," said Summer Wyatt, West Virginia state director for the Humane Society of the United States.

Fellow rescuer Tracey Smith, a regional director for the Animal Law Coalition, saw just how bad things had become.

"When I got here yesterday, I was really upset with what I found," Smith said. "A couple of the animals were laying in their own waste, and apparently hadn't had food and water since Friday, had to be rushed to the emergency room."

While those dogs are going to be OK, people have had concerns about the shelter for a while.

"This is a case that's been on and off the radar," Wyatt said. "It would get kind of bad, and then people would help out, donate money, help clean to the point where there could not be a conviction."

The shelter is called SHARE, which stands for Safe Haven Animal Rescue Effort. Boone County Sheriff Rodney Miller says it's anything but a safe haven.

What happened to these animals isn't the only thing he's looking into.

Stray Dogs in the Philippines - IRO

On February 2010, the first rescue organization was founded in the island of Cebu (the province) through the efforts of a core of animal lovers who wanted to change the conditions of animals in general, and of cats & dogs in particular. IRO, Island Rescue Organization, was founded and since then the core of four people has grown to a core of 20 active members, and over 100 supporting members in Cebu. IRO is a non-profit organization in the Philippines. IRO is associated with the Friends for the Protection of Animals (FPA) a U.S. non-profit organization registered in Nevada composed of Filipino nationals/U.S. citizens who wanted to help the rescues in the Philippines

IRO's Mission in the Bylaws are attached for your review. IRO has a website: www.islandrescue.org. The website has been redone and therefore not in its final format yet. IRO also has 1,726 friends in Facebook, a social network that has been very successful in keeping supporters and members informed about IRO's work. From the Facebook IRO page you will get a sense of the type of work we have been involved in, including a current legal action (both criminal and civil) we have pending against a prestigious university, Cebu Doctors University, who's janitor killed a stray dog, now named "Justi," in their parking lot. Fortunately, there is an Animal Welfare Act, Republic Act 8485, that is empowering IRO to advocate for the rights of animals in the Philippines.

Blind/Deaf Shelter Dogs: NC: "Babe", Blind Cocker Spaniel

Blind/Deaf Shelter Dogs: NC: "Babe", Blind Cocker Spaniel

Babe is a total sweet heart. She will hear my voice and follow me around, and then put her paw out to try to touch me and get my attention. She gets along fine with my other dogs and cats. She will growl sometimes, but not always, when she is eating. There usually isn't anyone around her but she growls anyway. It could just be because I have so many at my house right now. She has not been spayed and is heartworm positive. I am assuming they didn't spay her due to the heartworms? I'm not sure. She has all of her shots, is microchipped and has been wormed. And did I mention that she is a doll baby? She will sleep in her crate sometimes - I just leave it open. Or she will sleep next to my bed. One eye definitely has a pronounced cataract, but the other does not.

Three Skinny Dogs in PA Get Rescued

Dogs Deserve Better got a tip about three skinny dogs living in pens in central Pennsylvania. DDB's Tamira Thayne investigated, worked with the caretaker, and got him to give up all three dogs.

None of the dogs had food or water anytime Thayne was there, and there was excuse after excuse for how thirsty, thin, and hungry they were. Mostly the man blamed his ex-girlfriend who left the bad relationship for taking in the animals and leaving them there with him.

But regardless of how that went down, they were HIS responsibility to care for, and in that he failed miserably.

Harley, the golden retriever who was bought from a pet store who buys from puppymills, Roxy, the little back lab with every rib showing, and Savannah the setter mix with a major obsession to hunt down small animals, are happy to be free and starting to get acclimated to the REAL world, where dogs are part of the family.

Love Dogs? Then give your dogs what they need and deserve. An inside home with a family who loves and appreciates them.
