We are a small, local SPCA in Highland County VA. We recently received a phone call for help. A family with over 15 dogs are struggling with personal health concerns and finances.

Our Animal Control officer, shelter manager and an advisor to the Board visited their home today to acess the dogs.

The owners are about to care for about 1/2 of the exsiting group. Some dogs are in the home but most are chained outside.

We've posted the 9 outside dogs on our Petfinder site and I've attached a few photos. Most of the dogs were friendly but have lived most of their lives chained.

Miguelito est un podenco qui nous avait été signalé par des bénévoles espagnols, qui lançaient un SOS afin de prendre en charge ce chien abandonné dans un parc depuis 3 mois. Il portait de nombreuses traces de blessures anciennes sur le dos.
Nous avons demandé à notre amie, responsable du refuge le plus proche d’aller le mettre en sécurité. Il est maintenant à la pension avec nos autres protégés.

Les podencos sont aussi maltraités en Espagne que les Galgos, mais hélas beaucoup moins connus. Leur sort est donc souvent pire.
Miguelito est un chien adorable, qui ne demande qu’une bonne famille pour pouvoir enfin être chouchouté

Nous avons besoin de le préparer pour une adoption, mais l’été arrive, et il ne pourra pas remonter avant septembre.

Lévriers en Détresse a besoin de notre aide

A quelques kilomètres de Nevers, existe une association formidable.

Lévriers en Détresse se bat tous les jours et depuis plus de 10 ans, avec ses partenaires dans le monde, pour sauver ces lévriers de la barbarie.

L'association a besoin d’aide pour financer le refuge 
qui permettra d'offrir 9 places d'accueil permanentes aux lévriers sauvés. 

Compte tenu du délai moyen d’adoption observé depuis 10 ans, ce sont plus de 100 lévriers qui seront ainsi recueillis et soignés chaque année.
Le terrain pour construire ce refuge est déjà trouvé.  Mais il faut financer les niches « igloo », les tapis, les cages pliables, les gamelles, et les harnais. 4 202 euros sont nécessaires. Merci à tous ceux qui ce sont déjà mobilisés et qui ont permis à l’association de collecter 650 euros.

Esperanza : il faut en effet beaucoup d’espoir pour la ramener à une vie normale.

C’était à Séville en avril dernier, jetée plus morte que vive dans un sac poubelle…
Espéranza est un cas extrême, et pourtant sur Actuanimaux nous avons vu défiler des histoires dramatiques mais il nous semble que celle d’ Esperanza fait encore reculer les limites de l’horreur.

Pour qu’Esperanza récupère dans sa famille d’accueil, il faut beaucoup de soins et en particulier un matelas à mémoire de forme car les très gros escarres qu’elle a maintenant sur les hanches et les épaules à force d’être tout le temps couchée doivent la faire souffrir énormément. Elle a des vertèbres cervicales abimées, sa convalescence va être longue, cela ne sera pas superflu.
Il lui faut aussi un déambulateur pour lui réapprendre à se tenir debout. La réeducation d’Esperanza sera longue : ses pattes avant ne répondent pas encore, l’arrière train commence a reprendre un peu de force et Esperanza ne s’alimente pas bien couchée…

Le chariot déambulateur coûte environ 500 euros. On peut penser que c’est un luxe mais quelle belle revanche sur la cruauté si Esperanza reprend goût à la vie grâce à toute cette sollicitude autour d’elle.

WAREHAM (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - A former MBTA K-9 police officer was sentenced to serve 18 months in jail for felony animal cruelty.

43-year-old Antonio Carneiro of Rochester was also given 20 years of probation during a hearing Tuesday at Wareham District Court.

In Febuarary, 2009 Carneiro was accused of starving his dog, Nitro, a six-year-old Belgian Malinois to death in an outdoor cage at his County Rd. home. The dog weighed only 25 pounds and a necropsy indicated that it may have suffered for months.

These two friends are in Bosnia. They love eachother. A nice person saved them from the street and put them in a pension. But she doesn`t have alot of money, and she cant pay anymore. The man who has the pension has given a discount because they are strays and it is only 150 Euros a month.If nobody pays, they WILL go back to the street. The dogs have already been threatened by evil people, that wants to use them as "bait" for dogs they use in dogfights. The way this usually happens is by breaking the baitdogs legs and wrapping something around its mouth so it can not defend it self.

PLEASE help me, by being sponsor for these dogs, we only need 150 Euros a month! I will send the money every month to Bosnia. I will try to get them adopted. They are VERY sweet dogs! Perfect for a family. They are only 6-7 month old (may 2011). Please, give them a chance, or they will suffer a horrible death. If you wish to adopt, please contact me.

Greenville, South Carolina - In an apparent act of animal abuse and egregious cruelty, a young Spitz was found wandering on Grove Road with his eyes literally hanging out of their sockets and punctured.

Named Gandolf by his rescuers at the North Greenville Animal Hospital, Dr. Ann Malphrus had to remove both of his eyes and sew them shut. Dr. Malphrus stated Gandolf's sense of smell remains acute and thinks that the sweet nine-month-old, 16-pound dog can still live a good life.

Dr. Malphrus estimated the injuries to have been nearly two weeks old, and Gandolf may have been on his own and blind for several days. Since there were no other injuries on the dog, the veterinarian thinks the abuse was intentional.

Noah's Arks Rescue will be caring for Gandolf. The organization supplies emergency medical and surgical care to abused animals

Galgos del Sol is a small rescue based in Murcia, Spain that rescues abandoned and injured galgos (Spanish hunting greyhounds), rehabilitates them and finds them forever homes in the UK and other parts of Europe.  Thousands of galgos are abandoned or killed annually at the end of each short hunting season and as they are not always viewed as potential pets in Spain, they usually end up in perreras (pounds), where their lives are ended, often not in ways we would consider humane.  Galgos del Sol is entirely dependent on fundraising for its survival and is run by three dedicated women, Tina, Angela and Gaynor, assisted by a group of dedicated volunteers based in Spain, France and the UK.

Abyda Jaén es una pequeña protectora que, con muchos esfuerzos y pocos voluntarios, busca adopciones para los 50 gatos y 80 perros que hay en nuestro refugio, así como para los perros de la perrera de Jaén. Hace dos años, llegamos a un acuerdo con la perrera de Jaén para que no se sacrificase mientras la perrera no estuviese completamente saturada. El problema es que el veterinario de la perrera, ya no puede cobrar esas suculentas comisiones por cada perro muerto y se ha dedicado a difundir esto por todo Jaén para que la perrera se sature. Ahora la gente está abandonando muchísimos perros en la perrera y ya está muy por encima del número que puede albergar. Mañana vamos a tener una reunión con la empresa que gestiona la perrera y con el concejal de medio ambiente, que acompañado del veterinario municipal, que sabemos que nunca ha ejercido como tal, en una clínica, van a decidir el destino de estos perros de la perrera. Creemos que nos darán unos días de plazo para poder sacar al menos a la mitad de los perros que hay en ella en este momento. Si pasado ese plazo (creemos que será de un par de semanas o tres como mucho), no hemos sacado a los perros, comenzarán los sacrificios. Este veterinario ya sacrificó hace unos días a Kabuk, un pobre cachorrito de 6 meses, porque le dio la gana, sin avisar ni nada. Tememos que esto vuelva a suceder. Es muy triste que después de 2 años en que gracias al buen trabajo de Abyda se ha conseguido un SACRIFICIO CERO en la perrera de Jaén, ahora vuelvan los sacrificios.

Por este motivo, para evitar la masacre, os pido que nos ayudeis a difundir a los perritos de la perrera que aún buscan un hogar. Todos ellos necesitan encontrar ya una familia que los quiera y los cuide para siempre, como ellos se merecen. Queremos que les hagan olvidar su triste estancia en este sitio que huele a muerte.





Roco es un mestizo de Labrador. Nació el 3 de agosto de 2008. Fue abandonado en la perrera por su propio dueño, quien dijo que por motivos de trabajo ya no tenía tiempo de hacerse cargo del pobre Roco y prefería que lo sacrificasen. Roco es un perro entrañable, lleno de amor para todo el mundo. Se lleva perfectamente con todo el mundo.





Tarzán es un perro de belleza insuperable. Su madre es una pastora belga y su padre un pastor alemán. Pero ni siquiera su gran belleza le sirvió para evitar que su anterior familia lo abandonase en la perrera tras haberse mudado a otra vivienda más pequeña. Tarzán ha sufrido mucho en su corta vida y esto ha hecho que sea desconfiado. Es un perro dominante con la comida y necesita encontrar una familia con paciencia y con experiencia en perros de este tipo. Es un perro muy cariñoso el resto del tiempo. Sólo necesita que alguien le de cariño, confianza y educación. Según su chip, nació en marzo de 2008.

Even if we are part of the UE community ROMANIAN justice does not punish this people. We need European support to put pressure on this people for them to stop killing! 220 dogs were massacred last night in Botosani (Romania) at the order of the mayor Yesterday night over 200 dogs from Botosani (ROMANIA) public shelter were killed at the order of the mayor who based his overnight decision on the fact that an epidemic of Carre disease will start – because of the fact that some of the dogs in the shelter were sick. The dogs were discovered this morning by the volunteers that feed them every day – in plastic bags with traces of blood everywhere. The dogs were not euthanatized by injection but slaughtered. They called the TV stations and the police but nothing happened. They were in shock and tried to get out of the shelter the last few puppies that were alive. They were assaulted and offended by the guards. Public shelters in Romania don’t have a quarantine zone and only the NGOs feed the dogs and offer medical services. The dogs are kept in improper conditions because the final goal is for them to die. Euthanize is ILLEGAL in Romania but, because of political pressure, the local authorities euthanize dogs and try to hide it. Quand Luisa a été recueillie elle n’en pouvait plus, au bout du rouleau, tout juste capable d’avancer un pas après l’autre, obligée de fuir et fuir encore sous les coups, caillassée, battue, insultée aux cris de “fous le camp sale vermine !” chassée à coups de pieds. Une situation, hélas, très ordinaire pour les pauvres galgos espagnols.
